Golf MK4 1.4 16V Coolant Pump Replacement

As above pump needs to be timed (sorry driven off the timed belt), so hopefully the leak is from a pipe in behind the timing belt cover.
Definitely not an easy job, if it is the pump that is leaking, and the engine still runs, you were very, very lucky.

Right Folks, the task was beyond my technical expertise so got a pro to do it! He found that the Pump bearing had disintegrated!!!

He advised that if the car had travelled another 20 Yards then the timing belt which had moved a few sprockets would have definitely caused Piston / Valve damage! Anyhow , New Circoli Pump and Belts fitted, car runs really well again! My sincerest thanks to all for their advice. I have included Photos of the Old Pump!!

Never seen damage like that ......how many miles has that pump done?
We appreciate the update, and thankfully there doesn't seem to be other damage. Good job your son had the sense to switch off sharpish!

Estimate that the pump has done approximately 23K Miles since renewal!!!!

Never.....!
Must be of oriental origin but even that is stretching it.....the original pumps are good for 100,000 miles as a rule - definitely one of the better ones. I've changed a good few of these on diesels and leaks just aren't common.

Yeah unbelievable!!!!!

Destroyed pump has some indistinguishable marking on it!! FI something!!!
 
Looks as though the impeller came loose and the spring pushed it out against the back case?
 
It looks like the bearings have collapsed and the impeller made contact with the block.....thankfully the timing belt had stayed in place thus far.

Hi Mursal / John, Impellar has not come loose but John is right the bearings have collapsed as the shaft can be moved 60 Degrees either way!!! The spring is still there on the unit and the Mechanic said he fished out most of the Metal Impeller bits that he could!!
 
Any bits will just sit in the block and do no harm.
Is the car still behaving itself?
I charge about the ton to do these.....the pump and belts kit was £110, plus coolant and the odd hose clip.
Plus £5 'sundries' :mrgreen:

Brilliant!
I still can't see how a water pump could fail so suddenly......some would say the belt was too tight but it would be whistling if that was the case.
