Hi,

I have a recess in our chimney stack, that is big enough that our TV etc fits in, we are in the throws of redecorating and have decided to conceal the DVD player etc by building a cupboard, our aim is to make bifolding doors. To enclose the existing shelves.

My only conundrum is when searching for standard cupboard hinges, I want to be able to screw them direct to the wall instead of putting a wood batten on the wall first.

Do you think this is possible?

probably not for several reasons
the hinges must be dead flat and in line with the knuckle fully lined up
the leaves off the hinges need to be recessed into the timber
screws on hinges are often no7s that wont hold well in a wall plug

Thanks for confirming what I thought,

Will batten the wall.

You could place tv at front of shelf and hide dvd player to rear, or are you going to open up the cup'd each time you use it?

This is where the TV is, the doors are going to be from the 2nd shelf to the floor

nice job

is the skirting forward off the face off the frame??
this may stop the doors going to the floor and opening beyond about 120 degrees??

ahh ok the doors cant be recessed so the hinges will have to be face mounted so the doors cant go to the floor without removing part off the skirting or building the frame forward off the face off the skirting or stop the doors above the skirting

Oh also, once the flooring is laid I can plug the stereo together and that wire won't be there, it's just temporary so can still use the sky box without plugging the amp in.

you will have to raise the doors above the skirting
why not make a base at the level off the top off the skirting for the bottom off the doors to sit against
with timber underneath set back around 50mm

Thanks big all, if that's what I got to do then that is what I will do :)
