Hi,

I have been pulling out some unwanted bushes and v.small trees in my front garden. Whilst I have been successful in cutting round digging and levering out the roots of most of the bushes, I have 4 left which won't budge. I have found that they all have interwoven trunks of 1-5cm in diameter and the roots, which are similarly coiled have 5cm roots.

The roots seem to go down very deep and I can't get them out easily with my space/fork, or even using a saw on the larger roots.

Do you have any advice before I call a tree surgeon? Is it possible to use a chainsaw to cut at angles into the stump or will the soil screw the chain?

I need them gone quickly so stump killer isn't going to work and burning them out is also off the table

Thx for your help. Jon

Dip your chainsaw blade into soil and it'll be goosed in a minute......buy a mattock and see if Popeye is around :D
John :)

A stump grinder or tirfor winch sounds like the best bet. Was pulling similar stumps and root balls today myself.

You just need a mattock. Dig the soil out around the roots and hack them with the axe end.

Get that mattock for clearing the soil n shiz. Get a separate axe if you can, the axe heads on mattocks aren't that sharp. You could grind it sharp thou.

I'd recommend a mattock too.

When removing some bushes in my garden I managed to snap a spade, a fork and a pick-axe whilst also taking hours for one stump.

Bought a mattock and had the rest of them out in the same time it took me to do the initial one.

I'd recommend a wooden handle, the fibreglass ones don't have very good reviews.

A pick-mattock is the best digging tool. Once you've exposed the roots cut them with a sabre saw. You can plunge the blade into soil quite happily. You might bend it occasionally but it can be straightened or buy a cheap pack of 5 blades.

I've had a fibre glass handled pick mattock since the 90's. I bought it from Wickes and it has served me well.

You could grind a bit of a sharp edge on the end of the mattock blade itself with an angle grinder and use it like an adze on the roots. It's worked for me in the past.
