Afternoon all, i have a very boggy garden, it's always like that and has been since i moved in, it doesn't get an awful lot of sunlight so tends to stay wet and instead of grass we get moss.

I am currently planning a redesign including new decking.

I was going to install french drains to get rid of the excess water, which is fine but as i want to put fake grass down that needs 50mm of compacted Hardcore then a sand screed to give a level surface.

If i do french drains now then put compacted hardcore down, will it render the drains useless? Does hardcore allow water through?

Also, will i need to compact the mud back on top of the french drains to stop it sinking as the ground settles?

Thanks
Darren

The beauty of artificial grass is it doesn't need water so you can make the drainage as fast as you want. I recently laid one which had a foot of gravel underneath then a geotextile membrane then 40mm of compacted grit sand.

Hardcore is permeable however you must keep the clean stone and hardcore separated by a membrane to stop the hardcore washing into the gravel and settling it.

I would seriously reconsider decking if your garden is shady. The artificial turf will need attention too to keep it moss free if in a shady spot.

What kind of attention would the turf need?

We get lovely summers mornings her in edinburgh but only in the part of the garden where the deck will be going!

I've just had a quick look and normal moss killer is fine on artificial turf, so seems reasonably easy to maintain.

Hi there,

We moved in to a new build built by persimmon. The soil is full of clay and most of the gardens newly laid turf died because of drainage problems. Our back was really bad and and are in the middle of a slope and the water gathers from all the gardens into ours. It was a bloody nightmare.

We got artificial grass and raised the level and put in a drain along the length of the garden where the water would sit. It's connected to the main drain and it seems to have worked as I've not seen any water pooling up.

They put type 1 down and flattened it and then a black sandy looking mixture over it and smoothed it out. It's worked a treat and it's it's still nice and even.

Thanks. We've been avoiding the garden in the wet for years but just finished an extension which has left the place like a mud bath. And now we have a dog too who likes to bring in as much mud as possible!

Will be nice to get it draining!

We got some pallets of old turf from the bowling green to try and tidy it up till the gardener came out. Such a bad idea and should just have left it.

We got our artificial grass from B&M and you'll be surprised at how good it is and cheaper than other places. Artificial grass on a sunny day is amazing.

Yep the artificial turf can be treated with weedkiller or moss killer no problem.

That's good to know. I've had the odd weed that's started to grow on top of the artificial grass, but easily picked off. You really need to look for them right enough!
