Ideal Classic NF fan on its last legs

It seems there's only one guy locally who specifically repairs boilers and his mobile number seems to be out of date. At this rate, I may have to go for the draining down option until I'm back from my weeks away. If I do have to drain down, I take it that I'll need to empty the...

Ideal Classic NF fan on its last legs

Oh, another thing is that if I can't get someone to do it next week, it's going to be tricky because I'm working in the West Mids for the rest of January, then in London for all of February. In which case, I'd be better off draining down the system in case of a big freeze? Have never...

Ideal Classic NF fan on its last legs

OK, given that my budget is tight, I think I may well have to go for the fan rather than the whole boiler. The thing is that I'm currently taking temporary jobs around the country since I left my last permanent job in the summer, so it's very likely that I'll be moving if/when I find something...

Ideal Classic NF fan on its last legs

OK, if I look for a Corgi man to fit it, what would be a reasonable labour charge? Are there any forum people near me? I'm in Selby, Yorkshire.

Ideal Classic NF fan on its last legs

The cover is off, I don't see a number. :( The fan seems to be seized at the moment and is hot. I'm waiting for it to cool down and will try some more WD40. Could the WD40 have accelerated wear on the bearings? Could lubricating with oil instead help? If not, then I'm pretty sure the fan...

Ideal Classic NF fan on its last legs

Holy ****! I don't actually know, I can't find anything with the model number on it. :( The fan assembly looks exactly like this though...

Ideal Classic NF fan on its last legs

The fan on my Ideal Classic boiler (approx 15 years old) is on borrowed time. I've been able to revive it a few times with WD40 over the past few months but it's becoming more and more difficult to get it going now from a cold start. I've been looking on the internet for a replacement fan...

Ideal boiler won't strike up on either heating or water

Hmmm. I left it alone for a while, then the fan was stuck again. More WD40 has freed it up again. I guess this means there's loads of sludge in the fan mechanism that needs cleaning out? Is this a job I can safely do myself or is it strictly CORGI territory?

Ideal boiler won't strike up on either heating or water

It's working! :D Fan is noisier than before - but I think that's more to do with excess WD40 than anything else. Will wait for it to settle down. In the meantime, save for a new fan I guess... I still can't see any model or serial numbers. If I send photos, would anyone like to hazard a...

    Replacing Drayton three-way valve

Trust me, it was far more awkward than you might think. I was having to balance on one leg to get my head round enough to see what I was doing - a disaster waiting to happen. Anyway - I should have posted ages ago to say mission accomplished and thank seco! :) One slight snag is that I...

Ideal boiler won't strike up on either heating or water

Thanks for that anecdote, shambolic. I've sprayed some on the motor part and the impeller as you suggested. It does spin now - but I switched off again quickly before attempting to fire it up! I take it the cover needs to be back on before firing up anyway?

Ideal boiler won't strike up on either heating or water

I'm having the exact same trouble with an Ideal Classic. I'm pretty sure it's the fan as I had the same symptoms last year: fan suddenly got noisy, then the boiler died. Unsure of the model number, I'm afraid, where do I find it? But I took the cover off and the fan tries to turn...

    Replacing Drayton three-way valve

I left this alone for a while as I didn't need the heating. But now autumn is creeping up fast, I'd better get my finger out. I did take the lid off and was able to move the switch back to the heating position. The heating fired up just fine. Unfortunately, the switch was now stuck in this...

    Replacing Drayton three-way valve

Guess I'll need to remove the cover and use a multimeter to do that? When I do try to move the switch, there's a lot of physical resistance to it and it does force its way back again, with a slight whirring sound as it does so. If the motor is faulty, I understand it can't be changed on...

    Replacing Drayton three-way valve

I have an Ideal Classic conventional gas boiler with Drayton thermostat, valve, controller and pump. The boiler is working absolutely fine with hot water but the heating won't come on. When I try pushing the three-way valve switch over to H, the boiler fires up momentarily but the switch...
