    Roofing and Guttering (second attempt)

I don't think they should resume trading until they get an education. They don't seem even the slightest concerned about their extremely poor knowledge or lack of commonsense. According to them, their previous customers have been completely satisfied. I replied saying that ignorance is bliss...

    Roofing and Guttering (second attempt)

The roofers arrived. These guys are smokin'! They just said that everything the last builders did was wrong, except for the aris rail. None of the felt was stuck down, so it just came off easily. Obviously, they hadn't heated the felt properly to melt the bitumen at the back. 12:10 Wow! The...

    Roofing and Guttering (second attempt)

You're free to use any of the photos. My replacement roofer is coming tomorrow morning!

    Roofing and Guttering (second attempt)

Yesssss! You did it! They admit defeat! Good for them. I sent all your comments verbatim to the builders. They honestly felt sickened to the pit of their stomachs by your comments. Truth hurts. They really believed they could do the roofing, but they're too inexperienced. They say they can't do...

    Roofing and Guttering (second attempt)

freddymercurystwin, I'm going to pass on all comments, which they will need to follow, because they're going to have to complete this roof, even if it's complete crap. It's their time to squander  . It's more a lack of aptitude than experience. One person's St Paul's Cathedral is...

    Roofing and Guttering (second attempt)

Hi freddymercurystwin, Could you elaborate on this? I'm passing comments on to these builders. They need to know that they're ****ups and, more importantly, the why too. The time and expense is on them. Are there particular aspects of the job you can isolate which contribute to it being of...

    Roofing and Guttering (second attempt)

They're coming back tomorrow to install the lead flashing and form a gutter drip. I presume if they install lead flashing and some form of gutter drip, this would all still be unsatisfactory? Just making sure this isn't a legal grey area. Is it not possible to lay another strip of felt...

    Roofing and Guttering (second attempt)

noseall, Before I sue them for utter incompetency, is there anything salvageable here? BTW, they're doing this at no charge to myself. By law, I have to give them this second chance to correct their first mistakes. Would you agree that they've failed miserably? Nikki

    Roofing and Guttering (second attempt)

Following on from //www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=157952 I have had the "builders" back, at their cost, to redo the built-up felt roof. They are installing the lead flashing and attempting to form a gutter drip tomorrow. So don't be surprised that this is missing in the photos...

    Garage flat roof replacement

If someone could give me a very good get out clause to get me out of the clause that states that one must give these guys a second chance at correcting their mistakes then I'd entertain the idea. It's now been months since they finished that rubbish work and I'm still in the process of...

    Excavate around cast iron downpipe

[Quickly googles "jack hammer"] So that's what a jack hammer looks like. Thanks a million.

    Excavate around cast iron downpipe

My fault. I've reworded it now. So this means that breaking up enough foundation to get the paving slabs relaid just 30mm lower shouldn't really affect the downpipe? That would be great. I'll tell my workphobic builders to get on with it. What equipment should I expect to see them use to do...

    Excavate around cast iron downpipe

Thanks for the reply. It's not the downpipe that needs removing, it's just a bit of the concrete foundation around the downpipe. Can that be done without interfering with the downpipe?

    Excavate around cast iron downpipe

I need to have a section of patio paving stones relaid at the correct depth. About 1.5 sqr metres. They are about 30mm too high and too close to the damp proof course. This requires breaking up some of the foundation. There's a cast iron downpipe going straight through that concrete foundation...

Easy Seal Self Adhesive roofing products. Any good?

I've just located a roofer who would strip the garage roof, install the structure, osb, three layers of felt and lead flashing for £1300 inc. VAT. £600 inc. VAT for just the refelting and lead flashing. He's rated extremely highly on a rated web site. Where was this guy when I orignally needed...

Easy Seal Self Adhesive roofing products. Any good?

The £1500+VAT would include labour. I'm drooling over your "garage".

Easy Seal Self Adhesive roofing products. Any good?

Actually, now that you ask... I'm wondering what quality of flat roofing I should be getting for £1500 plus VAT on a 5m x 2.5m attached garage workshop within the M25 area. Suppose that one had to replace the old delapidated corrugated one (not asbestos).

Easy Seal Self Adhesive roofing products. Any good?

How do you proper roofers out there rate Wickes' "Easy Seal Underlay" and "Easy Seal Capsheet"? It is a two layer system. Is the system comparable to a traditional three layer system in terms of length of service? My surveyor recommends three layers of built-up felt as the minimum for a dry...

    Garage Flat Roof. Minimum Requirements.

I just had a certified roofer very briefly inspect the work. He reckons it just needs lead flashing all around, with no modiciation to the the single layer of felt, to upgrade the roof to something that would value £1500 ex VAT I paid. Hmmm.. Nikki
