External Wall Repairs, Rendering and Failed Brick Lintels

I am having the the outside of our 1930's house re-rendered. The old render has blown from underlying brickwork and is badly cracked. Years of little or no maintenance have taken its toll. The brickwork below is in pretty bad condition although the insurance company surveyor says it is just...

Cavity wall insulation in old house

Ha Ha, agree with that statement. All they are interested in is maximising revenue. One additional problem with drilling injection holes in older properties, particularly those that are rendered, is that the brick often bursts out on the inside, drops down a couple of inches into the cavity...

    Which paint to cut-in

That is the order which I did it but the joint line between the skirting/caulk and the wall is not very tidy. I guess that if the skirting is the last coat to get applied then that is the one which needs to be cut-in. HRH

    Which paint to cut-in

Chaps, Which paint should I try to cut-in to acheive a visually good straight finish where a wall meets the skirting board? Skirting is white gloss and wall is sandstone emulsion? ps. the joint between the skirting and wall is uneven and has been filled, in places, with caulk. Thanks

    Radiator Valve Settings

Wow, I didn't realise just how intricate this balancing caper is. Thanks for all your advice, I'll have a proper read and attempt to set up as per instructed. Luckily I have an IR thermometer liberated from a job I was working on a couple of years ago. I'll post how I get on. Thanks again...

    Radiator Valve Settings

Chaps, What setting should the return valves on central heating radiators be set at, eg 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 or fully open? What effect would different settings have on heat output of the rad ( if any ) and would it affect the economy/efficiency of the boiler in any way? Thanks HRH

Need Advice on Hefty Home Repair Bill

Mater & Pater's Windsor pad needed a major refurb a few years ago when Pater fell asleep with a No6 in his mouth and set fire to the ballroom. Cost more than £60k though, but we split the bill 60million ways so it didn't hurt too much. :D pip pip HRH

Silka or Cementone are these correct

Sika stuff is usually top spec. Used by ALL major civils contractors worldwide in some form or another. Suprised that B&Q actually stock it. I daresay that they will charge the earth for it though. You may detect that I don't like B&Q that much, or Halfords for that matter. Licence to print...

    Distorted Sound from Laptop

Stivino, You are a STAR. Your suggested fix took me 99% of the way there. Within Audio Manager, the 'Effect' was set at none but below that is a box marked 'Key'. This was set a +2. I reset to 0 and all is now well. Thanks also to Chris for your response. HRH

    Distorted Sound from Laptop

All, Not sure if this is a software or hardware problem but the sound from my Acer Aspire 3630 laptop is causing issues. When watching youtube videos or news reports, everyone sounds as though they have been breathing helium, ie high pitched and squeeky and any music sounds as though it has...

Best install method for Oak Floorboards

After much reading and research I have decided the on the following approach: Lay a vapour barrier - I don't think it's 100% necessary but I'll do it anyway. New 18mm Oak boards will be laid at 90deg to existing boards New boards will be PVA glued along full length and width of grooves...

Best install method for Oak Floorboards

Thanks for the link, Wouldyoulike, a very handy resource. One thing that I can't quite understand though is that if you secret nail floorboards surely the boards are then fixed in position and can't then move due to expansion or contraction. What use would the expansion gaps around the edges be...

Can I lay laminate floor over carpet underlay ?

B&Q & Wickes stuff is perfectly OK, however you will get what you pay for. Their 'budget' stuff will chip quite easily so go for a hard wearing type if it's likely to take a bit of a pounding ( hallways etc ). HRH
