    Overcurrent fault on socket ring

No one suggested that the breaker is faulty and is being too sensitive? I'd try swapping it out for a new one and see if that helps - they aren't exactly expensive.

    Whats safer?

Keep in mind that H&S enforcement by the managers isn't to ensure that you are safe, but to ensure they won't be sued. Often that is the same thing, but not always. So when it's overly onerous and isn't making you safer, and you ignore some bits in order to actually get the job done in a...

    Answers on a postcard . . .

Last pic looks like the countdown on a hollywood bomb. But where's the red and green wires?! You need to have a 50/50 chance of disarming it!

    Maintenance free joints

I order my heatshrink off ebay. It is slightly more of a pain as you have to stagger the crimps so as to avoid a bunch in the middle that the heatshrink won't pass over.

    Hager MCB alternative

Yes. Notice the slot on the bottom, near the front? That's what's needed to fit onto a hager busbar. Compared with say http://www.screwfix.com/p/crabtree-10a-sp-type-b-curve-mcb/56038 which doesn't.

    Battery charger (do they deteriorate)

Batteries _charge_ will deteriorate, the _charger_, not so much.

Modern CFL Street lights really that efficient?

I hope they do replace those sodium lights. I hate them. I _think_ the original idea was that orange lights are very visible. The problem with that is while I can then see the streetlights very clearly, I have a very hard time seeing objects which may absorb that frequency of light rather...

Problem with an electric hung fire.

Would screwing a couple of spacers to the wall and hanging the fire fromt that look too ugly?

    Old distribution cable

Not strange at all - cheaper just to cut and leave in place. If you want it gone, then the easiest way is to mention it loudly at the pub and a few nights later the cable will disappear and then reappear at the scrap metal merchants.

Steam Generator need an isolating switch?

This would come under special locations 703 Sauna. You can't have it inside the room, so if you don't want the switch there, where do you want it? Or is it just the style? It could be a shower style pullcord switch, but again, it needs to be outside the room.

    Dowsing

When I was a kid in Australia, it worked quite well to find water pipes. Didn't even use separate bits of wire, just one bent in _^_ shape. It's not so useful here where water can be quite literally everywhere.

    2-way dimming switches

Look up Master and Slave dimmer switches. They will allow you to dim at both ends.

    Silly

I have a degree (BSc CompSci), and the written 2391 exam is as hard as the hardest exam I've ever taken. Sure, it may seem like running cables and screwing things into walls is straight forward, and most of the time, you aren't going to see electricians pull out the calculator to do adiabatic...

    continuity of ring circuit

What I'd do is disconnect at CU, connect L-N on one side. On that side of the circuit, test Rn on each socket in order until the resistance jumps by an unexpected amount - that socket or the one previous will (probably) be the culprit. Or at least that's another way of doing it without...

    Suitable books for electricians course

I had a lot of time before my course started, so what I did was learn the regs using the NICEIC workbook. http://www.amazon.co.uk/7671-Learning-Guide-2008-Understanding/dp/1906091048 Gave me a huge leg up and the parts it covered were done much better than the course provided explanations. The...

CU Change - Not Part P Certified Spark

There are two ways to be compliant: 1) Be Part P registered and be able to self-certify. b) Notify the LABC. £140 sounds about right for LABC notification.

    35 years in prison!

People often don't think they'll get caught, or aren't thinking about being caught, so the threat of punishment when caught is minimal. Prison has three purposes. 1) Punishment. 2) Protecting the general population from any further crimes they may commit. 3) Rehabilitate them back into...
