    Railway sleeper retaining wall

Hi, I did something very similar: https://picasaweb.google.com/106771937189795881019/GardenProject# I used sleepers concreted vertically behing the horizontals and long timberlok screws to secure them using an impact driver. Cheers, Chris

    Gabion Retaining Wall

Hi there, In the end I went with a sleeper retaining wall and I'm very pleased with it. I used brand new pressure treated sleepers, so I'm hoping it will last a good ten years. I ordered a hundred sleepers via Ebay so got a good rate too. If you're interested to see the end result...

    Paint Hallway above stairs

I built something similar to a one of these: http://www.mattandshari.com/large-projects/ladder-platform-for-stairs.html when i decorated my hallways, worked a treat . . .

    Awkward Hallway Decoration

Hi, I've just decorated my hallways (I have a modern 3 storey town house, so there was a lot to do !) and looked into hiring platforms / ladders etc. but they cost a fortune to hire and I thought it was a rip off. Instead I followed these instructions...

    B & Q Spotlights cable too short

I had a similar issue with IKEA cables recently. I cut the cable in half and spliced in some cable of the same amp rating (3A) using crimps which I then heat shrunk over the top. Worked like a charm.

Leaf blower to suck up plums

LOL :D Quiet Sunday evening ;) I like the last suggestion the best ! Trouble with the Henry's and the like is that they use bags, not sure if they can be used without them . . . Been thinking about one of those Karcher DIY Vacuums that our mate Tommy Walsh advertises on the DIY channels -...

Leaf blower to suck up plums

I'm guessing these other suggestions mean that a leaf blower / vaccum won't be powerful enough to suck up the cherry-sized plums ?!

Leaf blower to suck up plums

They're pretty small plums - cherry-sized, I reckon it would take me longer trying to pick em up with one of those :)

Leaf blower to suck up plums

Hi all, We have what I think is a Damson Plum tree in our garden which overhangs a large portion of our lawn. Each summer it drops hundreds and hundreds of small plums, more the size of a cherry onto the lawn, and these have to be picked up before moving, which usually leaves me with a very...

Recommend a lawn mower - self propelled

I've got a Honda Izy and couldn't recommend it more - starts first pull every time and runs like a dream.

    Extending IKEA lighting cables.

Hi JameZZ, Yes, that's exactly the cable I'm using, and you've got it spot on - the cable I've added is between the switch and the light connector and I've cut off the 3-pin plug and wired it into an FCU. Thanks for the confirmation all is OK :) This is in the study - the lights are on...

    Extending IKEA lighting cables.

Hi ban-all-sheds, When you say "no" is this because this isn't the way you would do it, or because this is against regulations ? I've taped each "core" individually, and then taped it all together. Regarding the picture of the connector, here's a link to the cable in question...

    Extending IKEA lighting cables.

    1. great, thanks. 2. Yeah, I guess I could have done that, but I wanted the cable to the switch to be one piece of cable as it's on display. After the switch the cable is hidden behind a cabinet, so you don't see the joins as they're behind the cabinet. The lights are these ones...

    Extending IKEA lighting cables.

Hi all, Over the bank holiday weekend I've been installing some IKEA lighting (their "Format" range) on top of some display cabinets. These lights come with their own cabling system so you can daisy-chain a few together, but as usual I have a few questions to make sure the way I've done this...

Real wood flooring with staircase and stringer in hallway

Many thanks for all the advice on here - did the work over the bank holiday weekend and it worked out brilliantly. Thanks again, especially to joinerjohn and big-all. Cheers, Chris P.S. Can't believe I didn't have one of the Bosch PMF 180E's before now - what a useful tool, couldn't...

Real wood flooring with staircase and stringer in hallway

Hi Symptoms, Yes, I'm planning to "overboard" by laying down elastilon underlay and laying the 18mm T&G oak flooring onto that. I'm doing this work myself and don't really feel overly confident ripping up the chipboard sub-floor, hence the overboarding approach. Cheers, Chris

Real wood flooring with staircase and stringer in hallway

Hi big-all I get the underlay and offcut part of your post so that I cut at exactly the right height. Sorry, but I don't follow about the 5mm tape thing ?! Thanks, Chris

Real wood flooring with staircase and stringer in hallway

Thanks JJ and big-all. I feel a lot more confident now as I didn't realise the stringer would be attached to the wall . . . I'll undercut the stringer and the bullnose riser. I am keeping the carpet on the stairs, but will remove the carpet from the riser to make the undercutting easier...

Real wood flooring with staircase and stringer in hallway

Hi big-all, Thanks for the response, and apologies for the delay in the reply - had a little 'un with measles on my hands, so the flooring project has been delayed a little, but is back on track now . . . I've attached a couple of photos that hopefully make my situation clear (and I hope...
