Why isn't 3-core cable the standard for lighting circuits?

I don't see any need to label unused cores that have been terminated in connector blocks. If there is only one wire in the connector block, it's fairly obvious it's spare - or at least, 'not doing anything'.

Why isn't 3-core cable the standard for lighting circuits?

Personally, I put unused cores into a connector block or wago at each end. I prefer not to connect them to the earth terminal. Reason being, I don't feel it's technically correct to connect unused wires to used wires. We see it on this forum - a core connected to the earths - all of a sudden...

    Garage supply

You would be more likely to use a smaller MCB, but can still use the larger cable. What kind of things are you intending to run in the garage? It would be a better design to fit a standalone switch fuse unit in the house, done by splitting the tails with a Henley or ISCO block, assuming the...

You can really only go by the spots manufacturers instructions, these normally include minimum measurements.

    Cabling irregular shaped ceiling

The CORRECT way would be to use the joist formula on every joist, regardless of how their lengths differ.

    Fuse socket

Probably on a 6amp lighting circuit - but won't do any harm plugging an air freshener into it. Don't let anyone start plugging heaters or portable welders into it. There is an outgoing cable as well as an incoming cable. If you are certain the switched fused connection unit doesn't serve...

Paint is peeling - HELP needed please!

Bare plaster has to be sealed with a mist coat to prevent paint from bubbling up. PVA splashes, typically found on new plaster, can cause paint to bubble up. Is it original plaster, or the original 1900s plaster? How 'old' did the old paint that you painted over look? Have your walls been...

Replacing an old wired smoke detector for a new one.

Why do we need to know how many detectors are there?

Just uncovered this monstrosity hidden behind a kitchen cabinet

As far as cable zones, it may be ok - as the concealed part of the 'newer' cable is less than 150mm from the corner - if the tiles are 6 inch ones. The easy, common sense way would be to invest in a 20mm grommet, some earth sleeving, some 5 way wagos, and a single blank plate. But if you're...

    2 way light switch hell(p)

You need the NBS2GINT. That's brushed steel. Available from RS Electrical Supplies, and other places.

    2 way light switch hell(p)

On the RS Electrical Supplies site, they have a NPC2GINT which classed as intermediate only. Is that the correct colour/design? EDIT. No, that's polished chrome. Hang on...

    2 way light switch hell(p)

I think so. It's confusing because they intermediate AND 2 way. But since an intermediate can be used as a 2 way as well, I WOULD LIKE TO THINK it is a 2 gang intermediate. So I can't be 100% certain.

    2 way light switch hell(p)

Well, they are both intermediate switch modules. (Intermediate switches can be used for 2 way or 1 way operation as well, so intermediate ones will be fine.) Your new 2 gang switch will not do the job. Be careful to get intermediates, and NOT double pole ones, as they look similar to the...

    2 way light switch hell(p)

You have the wrong switch. The new switch is a 2 gang 2 way. At least one of the switches on your old 2 gang switch is an 'intermediate', and not 2 way. You will be able to do this with a 2 gang switch that has intermediate switches. It looks like your old switch is 'grid' system, which...

How to wire a ceiling rose (the bulb flashes) (Ed.)

Send pictures of the wiring at the bathroom light, and perhaps the other rooms if it's easy. Is there an extractor fan? Where does the yellow wire go? It's not at the bathroom light, according to your description. I would imagine the black/blue at the pull switch is NEUTRAL, and should be in...
