    Tall windows problem.

I can see this is a very difficult problem. However, you might try fitting a second double glazed window on the second floor, from floor to ceiling. That is, fit it so that it is actually fitted to the second level floor and extends up as far as the ceiling and creates a seal between the...

    Veneered MDF

Thanks for your prompt reply Jasonb, The cabinets are only H 500 X W 800 max, some are a smaller width. But your point about dragging is worth noting and I'll take that into consideration. Did you train formally or are you self taught? Either way, your work is very impressive. I'd be...

    Veneered MDF

Nice site Jasonb, and some very impressive pieces. On the wardrobe doors it looks as thought you've routed a V line which gives the doors a nice moulded effect. Are the doors MDF and if so how did you manage to get this effect without showing the underlayer of MDF? For the finish I had...

    Veneered MDF

Thanks for the suggestion Jasonb, nice doors, the photo looks as though you've given them a washed lime look, if so a nice touch. The suggestion I use pads instead of brushes is also helpful. 320g sounds a bit harsh for the effect I'm looking for, still many thanks for the post.

    frequency response

I assume you are referring to the sympathetic harmonics of the material rather than the frequency response, if I've got this wrong than I appologise in advance. It would be very difficult to answer your question based on just the choice of material. The variables include the size of box, the...

    Veneered MDF

I suppose the moral of this story is only post when you have a suggestion that answers the question, this way people won't misunderstand your intention. I try to work on the principle the people I am replying to have as much, if not more experience than myself, and they may only be asking a...

    Veneered MDF

I take it Dewy you've not done much work with MDF or with woodwork, thanks for your reply but I was actually looking for a reply from someone that actually knew something about the subject. Thank you TexMex for pointing out the obvious to Dewy, you are quite right the product is covered in a...

    Veneered MDF

Has anyone had experience of working with double sided veneered MDF. The stuff I'm working with is a quality wood veneered product used for furniture. It has a very fine layer of beech veneer, perhaps as thin as a hair. It is actually wood and not laminate before anyone asks:). I'm...

    Gas Fire - Internal Wall?

The answer to your question is yes. I recently searched for a solution to just this type of problem and found several specialist companies that supplied/fitted ductwork that would alllow for almost any type of fire to be fitted in almost any area of a building. Sady I didn't keep any of the...

    Design software (TurboCad)

I've heard a lot about AutoCad, but as you say the cost is astronomical, and I suspect it's a bit on the 'over kill' for the average DIY designer. At £6K does it also make the coffee? :)

    Another Off topic Discussion?

It took me almost 30 years and 4 trips to macaroni factories to convince my wife spaghetti does not grow on trees. I still haven't convinced money doesn't grow on trees either.

    Design software (TurboCad)

It's been some time since I made a contribution to the forum so thought I might talk about my latest venture into design software. For the true DIY anoraks the process of project follows a pretty continuous line. The thought....this is that stage when you have a moment of inspiration and...

    Cleaning stainless steal surfaces

I thought I'd share a tip I have on the cleaning of stainless steal surfaces. I installed a stainless steal cooker and extractor hood in my kitchen last year and I have been surprised by the number of people that wanted to know how I kept it clean and without smudging, smears or water marks...

Plastic capping and boxes when damp

It is possible to do this, though you'd have to allow for the odd shape and the fact that the plactic box would not have the structural integrity of a metal box.

Plastic capping and boxes when damp

I suspect the foreman is thinking of dry lining plastic boxes or surface mounted pattresses. However if you use a dehumidifier this should accelerate the drying out period and the metal boxes should be able to tolerate the moisture for the required period.

    Table Saws

Use the guard that came with you table saw, it should include anti kick back claws.

    Under floor heating

I too considered this until I discovered that the size of the fountain would have to be very large for it too maintain a reasonable level of humidity in relation to the room size. Our lower floor is only about 45 square meters and the waterfall/ fountains droplets would cause a damp...

    "Faulty" downlighters ??

If the hologen bulbs your referring to are the little 2 pin type and not the fully enclosed type, then I may have a suggestion. I've used these type of fittings under my kitchen cabinets and they are a royal pain in the backside :x . The pins often fail to make a decent connection with the...

    Draught from beneath old floorboards

Your experience is probably the same as many others that have watched TV programs that suggest this, not only can it cause drafts but it wis likely to increase the dust one finds in the room. There are somethings you might try. You could fill the gaps with a string type material, this is...
