    rent caps

We have my parents old house which we rent out. They brought it well below market value in the council house sell off of the '80's . The rent we charge is fairly cheap compared to most advertised in our area and is on a par with housing association rents. We occasionally attend a private...

Selling yourself for work- hanging doors

I am a chippy but I'd rather not hang doors for a living . Never really been a regular part of my work , I could go a year and only hang a single door or have a couple of dozen to hang in one go so I've never really had the experience to get particularly fast. Six internals a day is my best...

Where do you pee when there is no toilet?

What a waste , urine is wonderful stuff to take home for the compost heap and male urine is said to be better than female , probably why nature provided such a handy dispenser .

What do you believe "money" is?

Technically I suppose it's an iou that can be exchanged over and over again between an unending number of people without having to physically move material goods around . On practical terms it's a useful tool to appropriate a value to something . For example when bartering one has to have an...

    Petrol/Diesel ban from 2040

Barter has been discussed in detail on another forum I use and when I posted on here more frequently I did ask if people did or were prepared to barter their services for goods . I've done jobs in exchange for something else other than money but the general consensus seems to be to shy away from...

    Brexit residency rights

Ok playing devils advocate a little here but perhaps having no agreement and a series of people returning to their own countries would be better for Britain but certainly worse for the rest of the eu. Firstly the majority of people returning here would be pensioners . Their health care is...

Seed Potatoes for Sale- Are they Having a laugh?

I have at times brought seed potatoes , specifically if I want to try a particular variety. Last year I tried homeguard an early potatoe and also a blue salad potatoe. There have been times when I have planted several known varieties and kept a record of yield , taste , texture and suchlike. On...

    Removing radiator for plasterers

Also tape a small plastic bag over the valves once the rads are removed , it'll save you having to pick plaster out of it prior to refitting.

    Religion and contradiction

Hell has to be much much bigger than heaven , after all there's only a stairway to heaven but there's a whole highway to hell. If this god exsists it's clear where he's ( or she's or it's) sending most of us.

Soil Fertility Supression - whatever it takes to reduce weeds

Get a local gardener to come in on a regular basis would seem to be the best course of action. I don't like using chemicals if I can avoid it , regular pulling and hoeing will eradicate pretty much most weeds over time they eventually run out of energy to grow if constantly removed of their...

Drilling a 30 mm hole in handrail and base rail at approximately 40deg

Yes hence the reason for practicing on a piece of scrap. Clamp the jig in place and mark one edge , drill the hole , remove the jig and simply measure how far the mark is from the centre of the hole . It doesn't matter what that measurement is just mark the hand and base rails up with that...

Drilling a 30 mm hole in handrail and base rail at approximately 40deg

Yes that's pretty much it. I'd recommend practising on a bit of scrap first just to get the hang of it . One other thing is that I'd also recommend using something like an auger bit or at least something with some body to it to enable it to run in the former. If you were to use a speed bit for...

Drilling a 30 mm hole in handrail and base rail at approximately 40deg

Drill you hole in a block of wood at 90* then cut one end of that block to the desired 40* . This can then be placed and cramped in place and used as a guide to drill your angled hole .

Wheeled thing to drag stuff around

Along the "same"lines in the late nineties I was working in London and had the need for a small trolley. We found an abandoned supermarket trolley (ok not sure if it was Lidl or Aldi but you get the idea) and sawed the basket off and replaced it with a piece of ply. Robert's your mother's...

    Eating Out Of Date Food

We tend to rotate our food stocks so that generally speaking most stuff is used in date . However , we are not averse to eating things out of date , as said smell etc are probably better indications than what a producer prints on something. Sell by dates are pretty much only for the shop keepers...
