100% re_board. If you tape and patch that up, it'll stick out like a sore thumb. Another thing, older artex may contain asbestos, so if you "scrape" it back, you don't know what you may be breathing in. Re-board, tape and re-plaster, job done.

You wont lose very much space by using battens and boarding, plus it's easier to fit cupboards, run cables behind it, fit sockets etc etc. With dot and dab, I've seen the plasterboard sheets come loose and they have to be drilled, plugged and screwed back tight, I've seen people having problems...

It was more or less a whole pallet of Bonding Coat plaster. Every bag on the pallet had a red sticker, marked "Clearance", down from £9 odd per bag, to £5.

If out of date plaster ( within reason), is kept in dry place, there's no problem. A few weeks ago, our local B&Q were selling out of date plaster as "clearance", half price,, it went like hotcakes. If plaster is kept in a damp cold place, even if it's "in date", it's not good.
