    Top sash window sliding down

Thanks for all the helpful replies! I've found someone locally specialising in sash windows, so will get them to take a look and quote for a repair of the spiral.

    Top sash window sliding down

foxhole: interesting! And I think I know what you mean - there's a plastic tube up the edge, looking like it might hold some sort of sprial mechanism. I guess something like this, to repair/replace, best to call a professional, or is it easy to buy parts myself with a bit of reading/youtube...

    Top sash window sliding down

Just moved home and I've got some sort of modern sash window without weights. When I undo the locks, the top window slides down, which makes it hard to close again as I have to go outside to push the top window back up before locking. How do I fix this so that the top sash doesn't slide down...

Laying new engineered wood - need oiling post-install?

I'm getting conflicting advice from various parties, most of them with a vested interest, so thought I would ask for some impartial opinions! I'm installing engineered wood oak flooring in my house. It is a pre-oiled wood, with already two coats of oil (normal oil, not UV oil). - The floor...

Bathroom Taps & Fittings from Germany - will they fit in the UK?

Sorry for sounding like such an amateur, but I am! The wife wants several bathrooms redone in a house we just bought. Going to be talking to a plumber next week. Was just browsing around to get a handle of the costs of taps, shower heads, etc. Saw that there are some Germany based online shops...

    Bathroom cabinets side by side?

I'm looking to install mirrored bathroom cabinets, and due to needing around 2.3m width of wall to cover, struggling to find any single mirrored cabinet to buy that wide. So looking to maybe get a few units of one, and just hang them side by side. Problem is, will the doors get in the way of...

Double storey side extension - next to council allotment

Q: Can I build a double storey side extension, all the way up to the side boundary, where on the other side is an council-owned allotment? Context: House is semi detached. On the right is the attached neighbouring house. On the left is a 4m gap to the boundary. On the other side of the boundary...

    fencing rough guide price

I've just been quoted for a new fence with 4 concreted posts and a new gate, including taking out the existing fence which is in bad shape and blown over in one part. Came up to £590. The caveat is that this quote is for London.

Does Part E2 Building Regs apply to existing dwelling?

Hi, I've been meaning to put in engineered wood flooring onto my first floor self contained maisonette, and just got some pushback from the freeholder after enquiring about it. The context: There's a flat below me, and my current floor surface is just joists with wooden floorboards. I'm...

New Rads + Boiler... do I need a powerflush?

Doing a complete refurbishment of the property and replacing all the radiators. All the old radiators have been taken away and the system drained. The new radiators haven't been connected yet. I wasn't going to change the boiler before, but having just discovered that its got energy...

Soundproofing - engineered wood floor on 1st floor

Anyone have any recommendations for a very good underlay (without a damp proof membrane) to go inbetween the existing floorboards and the new engineered wood flooring? Looking for one that has the best soundproofing feature, without breaking the bank

Soundproofing - engineered wood floor on 1st floor

I read through several threads in the forum and was going to reply to this thread (//www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=1541317) but thought it would be better to start a new one as my query is slightly different. I'm contemplating laying engineered wood flooring in my 1st floor...

opening up first floor chimney breast

If you're going to remove part of the chimney breast anyways, you might as well remove it to the ceiling level of your room. Support required will be the same (or even less as there's now less weight) and you don't have an unsightly half chimney breast still there if you ever decide to remove...

Replacing a double glazing pane with condensation inside

Yeah, its less than 800mm from the floor. I think these uPVC windows were put in so long ago that the regs weren't in force back then. Just hope the new pane doesn't look out of place compared to the others! With a bay window that size - how much you think it might cost to replace it...
