    Metal speaker enclosures

Hi. I have a small office at home, so space is at a premium. I want to have a hifi in there and was wondering if it's possible to install speakers in the front of my metal filing cabinets? Just cut a hole and mount the speakers in the holes? Do I have to worry about making the cabinets 'live'...

    Phone extension cable

Thanks for the help everybody. Just to let you know, I only intend operating a dual phone off it. I will be leaving the router/hub and ADSL filter attached to the main socket downstairs. It's obviously an old cable as none of the suggestions fit the wiring I have. I'm just going to plug the...

    Phone extension cable

Thanks for all the responses. Yes cajar it is one of the flat cable type. The colours are what you mentioned and there's the small 4 pin connector block. The only wire connected is to the far right as you look at it. Really want to utilise this if possible as it's a rented property and the owner...

    Phone extension cable

Hi there. Just moved into a new office and there is a phone extension cable running to the upstairs of the property to the room we're using as the office. Openreach checked that it was working and said it was, now it isn't and is hanging to bits anyway. At the moment there is only one wire...

    Marketing Ideas

Go to your County Council website and check out their Planning Applications from householders. If they are having work done they will probably need a painter/decorator. Just send them a flyer about your services. It worked well for our Scaffolding company.

    Diluted PVA as wood primer

As the title says, can I use diluted PVA as a wood primer/undercoat? Diluted to 1 PVA/4 water?

    Blowing Fuse Wire

Many thanks for all the replies. You've put my mind at rest. I'm no expert when it comes to electrickery, so I thought I'd bow to the greater knowledge on here.

    Blowing Fuse Wire

I'm probably going to get told to change my fusebox, but I had a bulb blow on my 3 light ceiling pendant and it blew the 5 amp fuse wire in my fusebox. Question is, does this point to anything more ominous or is it just a one-off? I've had bulbs blow in the past, but they haven't taken out the...

    bay window curtain pole

I bought 6 white eyelet things, the type of thing you put a shower rail through and bought copper pipe to the appropriate diameter. With copper pipe being so flexible it was easy to manipulate it to the contour of our bay and then I just painted it all. Very cheap alternative.

    BT Master Socket Phoneline Wiring.

Thank you very much for such a quick response. It's been doing my bloody head in. I said to my wife that it would probably end up that there were only two wires needed, but I didn't know which two. I owe you a pint.

    BT Master Socket Phoneline Wiring.

As you can probably tell from the confused title, I don't even know what you call the bloody thing. Anyway had to move the surface mounted phone box from the window sill to paint the sill. Unscrewed it all and at some time there must have been some moisture in there and the wires have all broken...

    Point & Paint?

Cheers for the pointers chaps. I'm going to stick to the trusty brush then. Don't like roller method as I seem to use too much paint and it leaves lines everywhere.

    Point & Paint?

Hi there. Just wondering if anyone has used one of these sponge things and if they are any good. I know the professionals amongst you, will probably sneer at this kind of gadgetry, but I'm just a DIYer doing up my big old dilapidated Edwardian house, although by the time I've finished this...

    Air brick?

Hi there. I currently have a cast iron two brick height, what I call, air brick in the gable end wall just above ground level. It has corroded over the years and now I have a gaping hole there with just the surround in place. Are they called air bricks? as when I shop for them, I end up getting...

WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!!! It was the bloody uplighter units themselves, not the wiring. Well there's my first lesson in electrickery, check the new item works first 'cause it's a bloody arse when you have to take them down again. Thanks for all your help. Sorry I wasted your time with a stupid mistake.

Thanks for all the help guys. It is wired with normal twin and earth, but I have 4 t&e cables going to each rose, so as I say, I think some may be redundant but I don't have the expertise to figure out which. I had the house checked by a qualified electrician when I bought it and everything was...

You are very patient. I inherited this wiring system and to be honest, I think maybe some of the wiring is redundant as it seems there are too many cables for such a simple setup. I just rewired everything as I found it as there have never been any problems, just wanted to change from a single...
