    Earthing existing conduit

Excuse ignorance but what is: ECP and VIR? ........ and CPC! I am in the process of replacing the rubber cable being held up by the fact that the loft is a foot deep in loose-lay insulation of a fiberous nature requiring mee to get a full protective suit, goggles gloves and breathing mask...

Glass seperating from the cap of bulbs

I purchased a box of 6 60w candle lamps from 'a well known supermarket' and one night the first bulb exploded! - I mean EXPLODED! glass flew from the wall light fitting, even found some in my cup some 8ft away! After spending ages trying to get the cap out I noticed the sealant (or whatever...

    Earthing existing conduit

I've been replacing some terrible crumbling rubber cable in the upstairs lighting circuit of my new (to me!) house. I didn't mean to, but on replacing a broken light switch found this appalling wiring - odd because all other wiring in the house is more modern pvc (ring main is white pvc and...

    ring main question / explanation

Save copper? I think someone was misguided with that idea. in my house upstairs the shortest run I could possibly make means that about 35ft of wire needs to run from the last socket back to the consumer unit!

    ring main question / explanation

Since buying my new house, that needs a fair amount of renovation, I've been doing a lot of reading up on DIY projects and there is one thing I just don't get regarding the way in which houses are wired. Wall sockets are wired on a 'ring' and as I understand it you start with a wire coming...

TRV flow problems in upstairs rads

Just discovered I can't access the pump speed dial as it is facing the wall due to the pipework being tight to a corner and the flow direction necessitating that the dial face the wall - brilliant planning! So..... if I am brave enough to remove the pump and turn it down a notch, what should...

TRV flow problems in upstairs rads

In our recently purchased house, the CH system is open vent (pumped) with gravity feed to hot water and bathroom radiator. Last year, so I m told, the previous owners had TRVs fitted to the two main bedrooms, and the two living room radiators. This leaves the 3rd box/bed room, hallway and...

    Cold external solid wall question

I recently purchased a 1920 built end terrance house. The external end wall - which covers the hallway - is very cold (but not damp) so I am thinking about taking the plaster off to the brick and using Gyproc thermaline 27mm plasterboard which, from what I can tell, you simply glue to the...

Gravity feed to bathroom rad dissappointing

...not sure I am sufficiently up to making a sketch based on my lack of knowledge as to what is where. One of the problems with this house is that there is pipework everywhere under the bathroom floor. The Boiler - an Idea Classic Rs50, is downstairs in the kitchen. the two pipes that are...

Gravity feed to bathroom rad dissappointing

Nothing has been altered other than the radiator swap-out. The hot water heats well and fairly quickly. I have no idea about boiler thermostat calibration - it heats! that's as far as my knowledge on the subject goes! The boiler thermostat is set at position 3 on a scale of 0-6 and at that...

Gravity feed to bathroom rad dissappointing

Well, the old radiator and the new are pretty much visually identical. I notice that the hole that the valve screws into was the same as the old radiator - simply because I did think I'd re-use the valves off that but when I saw the sludge, thought better of it and flushed the system again...

Gravity feed to bathroom rad dissappointing

The original radiator had the same (similar) valves as the new radiator. The valves do stick out from the side of the radiator which is a Stelrad. You are implying that the copper pipework to the rad should be 22mm with 3/4(22mm?) valves - I can't see those listed anywhere BTW. Is changing...

....So do the valves mean anything?

Do you think this passes current regs?

Well, the people who showed me around were nextdoor neighbours who say the old guy who owned the place went into a care home ten years ago and sadly never came out, his property has been the subject of legal wrangles since. However, he has lived there all his life and his father before him and...

Do you think this passes current regs?

I've just been looking around an old house with a view to buy. The agents bumph says it hasn't been lived in since 2000. It amazes me that even in 2000 someone was using electricity surging through this.....

Gravity feed to bathroom rad dissappointing

I have no idea what make or model, they were sold to me by the guy at the plumbcentre. They connect to standard 15mm tails which come off a 22mm pipe. I currently have both values fully open I just did a temperature check and the flow end is reading 34c whilst the return is 27c.

    Power Cut

You could try going to a DOS prompt and type: chkdsk /f (hit return) or run this from the recovery console another would be: fdisk /mbr - which rewrites the masterboot record - sometimes when starting up during a power failure the masterboot reocrd can become corrupted, this command line...
