    Condensed foam type ceiling cornice

Yes... thanks. It's the last paragraph though. All water based products I've tested on this 'plastic' cornice can easely be picked off with a finger nail. I've now doubt it would, being so light, stay up glued with flour and water...

    CEILING CORNICE WON'T STICK.

Has anyone tried this new medium light weight cornice? In this case the material is called Duropolymer and is made by Arthouse and sold by Homebase. It's heavier than polystyrene coving and has a plasticy finish. The gun cement Arthouse sells for fixing is a water based stuff. Seems...

    Condensed foam type ceiling cornice

Yes, thanks, but this is not - as I think you mean - Polystyrene coving which I agree can be fixed with water based caulk. It's much harder and has a shiny plastic surface. Much larger than standard coving. It's to imitate the larger victorian plaster cornice.

    Condensed foam type ceiling cornice

Has anyone tried this new cornice material? In this case it's called Duropolymer and is made by Arthouse and sold by Homebase. The gun cement Arthouse sells for fixing is a water based stuff. Seems the same as so called water based No Nails and the likes. The problem is...

    Another MDF painting question...

The acrylic paints I have used on MDF, being microporous, have eventually allowed water to penetrate and expand the material (believe this is one of selling points of acrylic: it allows the wood to breath), hence, though I still use acrylic primer/undercoat (Joncryl), which seems ideal for MDF...

    Chimney ventillation devices

Thanks, Datarebal for your relevant comment. To put the main question another way: there are several types of cowl available claiming to shelter the chimney pot from rain whilst allowing the stack to be used. I have tried one of them and it caused a downdraft. Has anyone any...

Bit complicated. Will explain if necessary or is that a rhetorical question?

    Chimney ventillation devices

Hello: can anyone reccomend a device that will both prevent most rain water from falling into the chimney pot and will allow a solid fuel stove or open fire to function efficiently? Have tried one that resembled a chinese hat with a mesh below but it caused the fire to emit smoke into the...

    Painting over flakey paint.

Two members of another forum recommend this Zinsser Peel Stop too. I got a price locally of about £7 + vat per ltr. Not tried it yet. Perhaps where I was going wrong was trying to cover the peeling area with fine surface filler – Easy Sand Joint filler – to conceal the different levels before...

    Painting over flakey paint.

Someone reccomended this ZINSSER PEEL STOP product. Not tried it yet but it's made for the job. http://www.zinsseruk.com/shop/Product.a ... 0&pgId=360 Wonder if, from the product description, it's just acrylic varnish.

    Painting over flakey paint.

You know when interior plaster or render has been previously painted and the old paint will neither come off nor stay on. You think you've got all the loose stuff off but your new paint, even solvent paint, gets under the edge and loosens more paint. Has anyone got any ideas? A sealer...

    Painting drywall joint cement.

The PVA worked well. Did 7 ceilings with it. It also makes the emulsioning easier as the Easy Sand filler is less inclined to soak up the paint like a sponge.

    Painting drywall joint cement.

Good point. The house where I'm presently experiencing the problem is unheated and I don't have to describe the Brithish weather. Will try the PVA option first - perhaps the cheapest and most readily available - and let you know.

    Painting drywall joint cement.

Yes. Thanks Joe. PVA. Good idea. Amazing how experiences of the same issue, both no doubt valid opinions, can vary - from 'never experienced the problem' to 'it's a common problem'. Thank you both for your help.

    Painting drywall joint cement.

This Easy Sand joint filler is necessarily as soft as chalk. It absorbs the emulsion and becomes even softer. Very occasionally tiny bubbles form. Also it can tear if I make the mistake of re-rolling over a still soft part. This has happened with Gyproc and Knauf. There is a primer...

    Cement verge

Around this area in Wales many of the slate roof verges are finished with mortar. The slates finish flush with the rendered gable end then a strip of what looks like sharp sand mortar built up. The strip is about 8 inches wide, 2 inches deep and overhangs the gable end by an inch or so. I...

Hello: can you please advise the correct type of steel lintel and the weight of the lintel for the following: 9" solid brick lime mortar wall. Structural opening 2400 (plus 300 bearing surface) = 2700mm. Load on lintel outer leaf: wooden wall plate supporting roof trusses plus...
