    Advice wanted for wall repair

I live in a 1905 red brick terrace with, AFAIK, lime mortar. Previous owners have basically done no maintenance and the weather-facing walls are now in a poor state. In particular: - previous motion has cracked the mortar (motion now stopped). - water-proof glaze has gone, leaving the...

    Ravenheat CSI85A timer problem

I have a Ravenheat CSI85A condensing combi. For a while now the timer has been unreliable, not always coming on. Now it's failed completely. (A quick search reveals that these are notoriously ****e.) Hot water still works fine; the symptoms suggest a sticky relay in the timer module itself...

Servis 1000A won't use external hot water

Yeah, he's right. I just tried the 95° setting and it filled from the hot tap, as did the 60° setting. Unfortunately, I do all my washing using the 45° setting, which doesn't... bah. Oh, well. Ta, everyone.

    Gas cooker installation

Doesn't having unregistered gas-work done mean that you forfeit your building insurance, anyway?

    Gas cooker installation

Ah, cr*p. I don't think there's anything else constructive I can add to that. Oh, well --- thanks for the info.

    Gas cooker installation

I've just had the gas in my house replumbed. One of the things I got the plumber to do was to install a bayonet fitting where the gas cooker's going to go; he said that this meant that I wouldn't need a CORGI guy round to install the cooker: it's just a matter of plugging the hoses in (and...

Servis 1000A won't use external hot water

I have said elderly washing machine. I have also recently had a new gas combi boiler fitted, which can produce cheaper hot water than the washing machine itself can manage using its electric heater. Unfortunately, the washing machine seems to refuse to use any hot water from outside. I've...

    Combi clearances

Grr. Just as I had nearly made up my mind. Can anyone recommend a Worcester dealer? Their web site doesn't have pricing information. Plus, how much can the top and bottom clearances on boilers be crowded? i.e., is this a safety/ventilation issue or an access issue because there's pipes...

    Combi clearances

I'm trying to buy a new combi boiler (as those of you with long memories might remember...). I pretty much know what I want, but there's one final piece of information I need before I can actually decide, and that's how much space I need to leave around the boiler. The space in my kitchen is...

    Leaky stop cock

The worst that could happen... hmm. The added water could cause a tiny but of the foundation to soften, triggering the nascent subsidence in my 105 year old house to move just a tiny bit, so causing all the expensive building work I've just had done to collapse in a heap, in the process shorting...

    Leaky stop cock

Actually, I'm in Reading. The drip has since become a bit worse. Luckily, I've got the floor in the kitchen up, so there's enough vertical space to rig up some old guttering and a gorilla bucket, which will hopefully last overnight so I can empty it in the morning. I've tried, very...

    Leaky stop cock

Alas, I don't have access to the boundary tap --- I've found a small patch of tarmac where it should be. It's either been moved or covered over. A call to Thames Water indicates that they really couldn't care less (in very nearly as many words). The local council were more helpful, but it'll...

    Leaky stop cock

My stop-cock dribbles. (I'll wait here for people to make funny comments... all done? Oh, wait, one more there at the back. Dude, that just wasn't worth the effort. Don't give up the day job.) I have a plumber booked to come round and replace it, as well as do some other work, but in the...

How big a boiler do I need?

Thanks, SB, tons of useful information. I'm actually not particularly bothered about how difficult they are to service or install --- while I like explosions, I wouldn't want to live in one, and so it's CORGI all the way. I think I'll go for a 30kW if I can find one; it's probably overkill...

How big a boiler do I need?

Cool. Thanks. Any suggestions as to a boiler make to go for, or more importantly, stay away from? The basic ones I'm looking at are Ravenheat or Biacsi --- the general impression I'm getting is that they're about average.

How big a boiler do I need?

Not enough sleep. I meant to say condensing combi boiler --- it'll be heating the water on demand, so no cylinder. So if 15kW is all right for heat, plus 10kW for the hot water, that's 25; not far off the plumber's recommendation.

How big a boiler do I need?

I'm attempting to replace my existing back boiler and indirect tank with a condensing boiler. Unfortunately, I'm having a lot of trouble working out just how big a boiler I need. My house is a 1900 terrace with three bedrooms, six radiators, and one bathroom. So far, the estimates of what I...

    Combi boiler recommendations

It sounds like they're all much the same, as far as I can tell... I shall go and browse in B&Q and do some more reading up. Thanks, all.

    Combi boiler recommendations

I'm getting a combi boiler fitted to replace my existing tanked indirect back boiler system. No tanks, instant heat, decent pressure --- it's got to be good. Does anyone have any advice over a good make of boiler? The plumber has recommended a 30kW Worcestor, at (IIRC) about 800 or 900 UKP...

    Lighting circuit geometry

Oh, don't worry. I have a healthy respect for electricity. What I'm doing now is making sure that I *do* understand it before doing anything. I just found the fact that lighting circuits are radials slightly surprising given the general anal-retentiveness of the UK electrical regulations, and...
