Horrible paint on walls - help !!!

Hello, We have recently removed some very nasty wallpaper from our spare room. The wallpaper itself was the sort of foam backed stuff that was a nightmare to get off. Underneath it was this submarine grey coloured paint type stuff. We didn't realise it was paint at first, until some of it...

Hi, I have a light in the upstairs landing that is also wired from the hallway. Currently, the hallway light has two switched - one for the downstairs light, which works perfectly, and one that is supposed to switch n the upstairs light when it's off and vice versa. It doesn't do that. The...

    Horrible lawn

We have a very large patch of moss, which has caused the earth underneath it to go all springy, and the rest of the lawn is made up of patches of grass and bigger patches of clover. It looks nice and wild, but I'd really like a proper lawn. What is the best way of getting rid of the weeds and...

Laying down concrete or paving slabs ?

Hi, I have a small area along the side of my house, which is a sort of little walkway, then a 10 foot by 6 foot bare space. It is basically compacted mud, with lots of weeds. I would like to clear it out, and lay either concrete, or paving slabs, and put up a garden shed. What would be the...

Wooden flooring in whole of ground floor

We are just about to install wooden flooring in our entire ground floor area - approx 42 square metres. This includes the kitchen. Is this a good idea ? Has anyone had any problems with wooden flooring in kitchens ? Should we waterproff some areas (near sink/washing machine) ??

Glass bricks or open plan ??

Yeah, we realise we have to box the meter in. Stainless steel sounds good...and the glass bricks idea is awesome !! We had heard somewhere that for fire regs, we had to keep the hallway closed off from the rest of the downstairs...hence we have to put up the glass brick wall...is this right ?

    Non-recessed Halogen downlights

Does anyone know if you can get halogen downlighters, that are NOT recessed into a ceiling ? The gap between my ceiling and the floor above is only 50mm, and so unusable for recessed downlighters.

    Recessed Halogen lighting

I've had an electrician come round to pric eup putting spotlights in our masonette, and we've been told it may not be able to be done. Reson being that there is not enough depth in the ceiling. There is only about 2 inches between the ceiling and the floor above, and this will cause the bulbs...

    central heating how much

We had 4 quotes - one from a friend in the business, 2 from local firms, and 1 from British Gas. The British Gas one came in at 3,700 quid for a brand new Brit/Scot Gas Boiler, removal of the old tanks, and boiler, fitting all the piping, electrics, radiator valves, a powerflush, year's central...

    Moving a Gas Meter

Well, I called a local Corgi registered Gas Installer who said he would do it for 120 quid, and he can do it anytime. That was in comparison to Transco who would have charged upwards of 200 pounds, and I would have had to wait 4 to 6 weeks just for a site inspection.

    Moving a Gas Meter

I would have thought a CORGI registered plumber could have done it, but most are saying they won't, as the pipes up to and including the meter belong to Transco, and they cannot shut off the gas before the meter, only after.

    Moving a Gas Meter

Has anyone here actually had Transco move a gas meter in their property ? I'm desperately trying to get them to get into my property to move the gas meter which currently sits neatly IN THE MIDDLE OF MY LIVING ROOM, as it's an ex local authority house, the planners didn't do a great job. All I...
