Upgrading one pipe to two pipe system ready for new Boiler

Why not fit an electric immersion heater to the cylinder? It would take the pressure off you while you're working on the heating pipework. And you'd have a backup sytem for the water, in future.

Dodgy Boiler Installation - More advice requested please!

Phew! Quite a few viewpoints! The tallow story is amazing! Yes Tony, I was probably looking at the wrong thing. Back to the bypass - It's not only needed for boiler overrun. If all TRV's shut before the roomstat (which may not exist), then the boiler will probably lockout on overheat as it...

Dodgy Boiler Installation - More advice requested please!

I'd had a look at the Potterton info on the web before making my comment about the interlock. I thought I saw, on the page describing the boiler operation, something about it having to 'prove' flow for 2 minutes, before firing. If I misread it, my apologies. Concerning the bypass, my...

Hot Water Cylinder with Flow In / Flow out swapped around ?

The convention is that the hot pipe is connected to the upper connection on a hot water cylinder coil. Presumably to assist gravity flow. I've long thought it is a wrong notion if you have a fully pumped system as it makes more sens to me that you put the hottest part of the coil in the coldest...

Wall Therm does work Potterton PRT2, control EP2001

Yes indeedy. You're a lucky one to find that so easily! It does rather imply that the roomstat doesn't work properly though, as they presumably disconnected it for a reason. If it doesn't work, you might want to think about buying a 'programmable' one as the replacement, they are current 'best...

Wall Therm does work Potterton PRT2, control EP2001

If I was you, I would check with a mains detector tool, possibly one of those screwdrivers with a neon in it. Only one wire should be live and it should be the red one, but it might be one of the others. Anyway, having found the live wire, I'd turn off the mains at the spur controlling the...

    Boiler kettling

I would have thought that if you can remove the heat exchanger then you can safely descale it with anything you like, because you won't contaminate the rest of the system. So, you coud use kettle descaler, vinegar etc. I don't know and I haven't tried it, but I would imagine these are stronger...

    Boiler Overheating On Shut-off

potman, it sounds like the flow stops when the trv's shut, so the boiler can't get rid of the heat. Is there a bypass, and can you open it up a bit? You should be able to tell if there's a flow through it by the temperature of the pipes each side of it. I don't think the air separator is...

Strange things happening in my header tank.....

Have to admit, Softus, that I've never seen it myself, on the pump, but have heard of it from others. Seems quite feasible. As to the rad valve, if the gland is leaking a little, it can go unnoticed, and if it's at negative pressure when the pump is running, it won't leak water outwards then. If...

    Water Pressure

Out of interest, why can't you put in a break tank on the mains (to byelaw 30) then pump the outlet form the tank to the rest of the house? Obviously, you shouldn't need to, and it's a bit complicated (extra cistern, pump, pressure regulation etc.) But that's what done in offices and flats.

Strange things happening in my header tank.....

An inward leak at a pump - popular because it has washers that could fail - will be shown by removing the pump and observing the colour of the openings at the inlet and exit. If the inlet is brighter, oxygenated air has passed through it. Elsewhere, you might find a place e.g. radvalve, that...

    Boiler kettling

How do you know the thermostat on the boiler isn't faulty and allowing it to go overtemperature and boil? Until that's confirmed, the rest, though interesting, is a bit academic.

Dodgy Boiler Installation - More advice requested please!

Agile wrote ( unless the boiler has a suitable interlock ). In the case of this boiler, which detects absence of flow, this is an acceptable substitute for a wall stat, isn't it? I would agree it isn't 'best practice' though, because that expects a programmable roomstat, permitting different...

Dodgy Boiler Installation - More advice requested please!

It doesn't matter if the TRV's are on flow or return as long as the flow is in the right direction. The convention is to put them on the flow, but it's just that, I believe. You are supposed to use a room stat, to prevent the boiler firing when the house is warm enough. your boiler has a switch...
