    Confined spaces

I have just spent all day plastering a small porch about 1.5 x 1.8m. This porch is then divided into 2 areas, one part is going to have a toilet fitted?????????? the other is the porch I suppose. Anyway this small area had a total of 21 different faces that needed plastering/beading plus the...

    Need new cordless circular saw

In the end I bought the Dewalt DWS520KR corded 240v plunge saw from Lawson's with 1.5 and 2.7m rails and 2 clamps. Have to say I'm really impressed with it, very easy to use, quick to set up and position and the quality of cut is superb, almost zero breakout on laminates - and I'm being fussy...

    Need new cordless circular saw

My old Dewalt DC390 ran on 18v NiCd batteries which are now dead along with the charger. I've been running it off my other Dewalt 18v tool batteries. I just think that by the time I've bought 2 new batteries and a charger I may as well upgrade to a new saw. I think if I went with the plunge...

    Need new cordless circular saw

Thanks Big Al, I hadn't even thought of a plunge saw. My main use is dimensioning sheet materials, cutting kitchen worktops etc. At the moment I'm clamping a straight edge to the work as a guide and then sawing with the circular saw. Logically I think I should be looking for a plunge saw -...

    Need new cordless circular saw

Hi, my Dewalt 18v cordless circular saw has given up the ghost - I got it in 2004 so can't complain. Anyway I'm looking at what to buy as a replacement, I don't use it every day (or the saw) but I want something that will perform well and be reliable. Maximum price £400.00. Looking at the...

Work top repair or Hob edging

There are specialist companies nationally who repair damaged worktops. They will patch in a repair that is invisible to the human eye. Google them.

    quoting

Some interesting thoughts here. The reason I asked is because I always ask what quotes customers have received. But some colleagues were really surprised I did it - can't see a problem myself. As has been said usually take these quotes with a pinch of salt but the majority of the time I can...

    quoting

If a customer says they have received other quotes do you ever ask them how much those quotes. Are there any unwritten rules about this?

    Bookcases

Thanks Big All, when you say 9x1 planed are you talking about pine? Also it depends on the size and number of pages of the childrens books doesn't it  as to the weight..........

    Bookcases

I'm thinking of building a set of bookcases with the carcases made from 18mm mr mdf, but not sure of the material to use for the shelves. I was hoping for a 800mm span and a depth of 200mm. These shelves would need to be adjustable probably set on pins. The books on the shelves would be...

    Quote conversions

After a pint or two the other day (well it is half day on a Friday) we were discussing how many quotes we submitted were actually accepted. Going round the table and averaging up we reckoned that about 50% were accepted. The sparks seemed to have the highest conversion rate about 70% with the...

All part of the service...or not?

I don't feel such a mug now. All the answers mirror my own experiences, you know the plumber couldn't make and I need to get on with the job that day etc, etc. My Public Liability does indeed cover all the types of work we take on as a company. But I have been caught out in the past - one time a...

All part of the service...or not?

A question to all the plasterers on this forum who plaster for a living (as I do). When plastering a ceiling for instance would you drop down/disconnect any downlighters, remove light pendants or any other lighting, or remove ceiling or wall mounted extractor fans prior to starting. Also would...

    Sonic measurers

Can anyone recommend a sonic measurer. I had an old Ryobi which worked well but has now been dropped too often and is now unreliable. Are there any new ones on the market that any of you guys use. Cheers

    Much work for plasterers?

Recommendation by word of mouth is obviously the best way to get business, but if you want new unrelated business to expand as we do then you choose some form of advertising. Last year for us 70% new business through advertising 30% through word of mouth. Hmmmm maybe thats not so good

    Much work for plasterers?

Are you a plasterer or in a completely different line of work? Therefore you could only plaster at weekends. As far as I'm concerned there is much less work at the moment and we get plenty of site plasterers calling up to see if we need extra men. I don't know how the other spreads are fixed...
