    Metal for plastic switch replacement...

Ok thanks for the reply - but don't I need to ensure a proper earth from switch to back box, rather than just rely on the two screws earthing the whole lot? I guess I'm looking for a definitive "do it this way" kind of advice!

    Metal for plastic switch replacement...

I'm just about to swap out the old plastic switch here for a new metal one. Could someone please confirm that I need to run an additional earth lead from the switch to the back box, which is already earthed. See pic. I've seen other posts but I really want to be completely sure before I do...

    Worc Bosch boiler playing up...

Yes, I did several years in Avionics a long time ago, but those lessons in how to make a firm connection never leave you! But a great reply, thanks!

    Worc Bosch boiler playing up...

He said he was not allowed to do it when I asked him - not certificated to do it, he said he was "on the technical side of things..."! I ended up fitting the switch myself.

    Worc Bosch boiler playing up...

May well have been a loose connection to cause the burning, as you say, but having replaced the isolator switch & fuse (for a 3 amp...) I'm still left with this EA error every few days. Any ideas why this may be happening? The boiler is not quite yet 10 years old, so is possibly still under...

    Worc Bosch boiler playing up...

Thanks Ian. From what I understand, the actual fuse was ok. Trouble is, as someone who knows zip about these things, I could be told anything... The 'live' wire from the boiler inside the fused isolator switch had burnt through so had lost contact - see attached image. I think we probably need...

    Worc Bosch boiler playing up...

Had a new Worcester Bosch Greenstar 37 fitted just over 9 years ago, brilliant boiler, never a problem. Then two weeks ago, no hot water. Up into loft to find boiler dead. No lights, nothing. Nada. Called out the Plumbing/Heating firm that fitted it/did the re-plumb of the house, who took the...

Question about Stop Chamfering of oak posts...

Thanks big-all, sounds like a plan. Builder is going to set the support posts up on low piers capped with engineering bricks, so the chamfer height will be as critical as the width acoss the chamfer flats - but I like your thinking. Thanks for input.

Question about Stop Chamfering of oak posts...

Good advice Gregers, thanks. I'm seeing the supplier tomorrow and it will be he who does the work on the timber - I'll ask him to show me some examples on similar sized pieces. Just seems logical to me that there should be a chamfer depth that will look 'right' on a 6" sq post - I reckon...

Question about Stop Chamfering of oak posts...

Hi all, I'm having a couple of 2.4m long x 6" square green oak posts put in as porch supports. Question: Is there a specific width/dimension for the stop-chamfering of the corners? To my mind, if it's chamfered too much it'll look wrong, equally so if it's not chamfered enough. Just...

Help!! Clogged up shower drain/waste pipes....

Andy, thanks for your post - I don't have a wet vac, but I can see where you're coming from... I have, however, resolved the issue; not by sucking, but by blowing! A trip to one of my favourite shops, Robert Dyas, saw me emerge with a pump-type plunger - £9.99 and a complete godsend...

Help!! Clogged up shower drain/waste pipes....

Hi John, it's just hair, soap scum/ shower gel etc - all that good stuff that we humans seem to shed when we shower! The shower's only a couple of years old - we renovated this place in 2009 - so there is a hair trap that we clean on a regular basis, but I have a sneaking suspicion that the...

Help!! Clogged up shower drain/waste pipes....

Right-ho, I shall acquire some OneShot tomorrow. I shall go in manfully, armed with said solution and maybe a plunger for later adjustments! Well done on the smoking - I stopped cigs in '92. Feel better for it, too. Still fancy one sometimes, even after nearly 20 years! Thanks...

Help!! Clogged up shower drain/waste pipes....

Hmm, OneShot - I've read about that somewhere else on the forum this morning... Will it cause damage to plastic waste pipes?

Help!! Clogged up shower drain/waste pipes....

Couple of years ago we had a double shower tray and screen fitted - very nice is is too, so we're pleased. The one main bug bear is that the waste keeps getting blocked up and if we're not careful, will rapidly start filling the tray and potentially overflowing into the bathroom. I think...

Recessed LED lights in sleeper wall...?

OK, quick summary which might help others about to do this: We picked up the outdoor lights from Wickes - 30mm white LEDs. I was in two minds about the blue ones, but we opted for the white ones as we don't live in a particularly modern house... The lights were installed at about 300mm...

Recessed LED lights in sleeper wall...?

Thanks for that, XDave - a useful post that helps me out no end. I was wondering about leaving a length of excess cable in the event I need to replace the odd one or two if they fail. Picking up the lights today, so will have a better understanding when I get the box open!
