Have replaced many timber lintols over the years, a couple of PC lintols will do fine, remember to use acro's, better safe than sorry. If there's a lot of thick, possibly loose stone, needles through the wall will hold up the stonework
Put some sterling board or plywood in the sides of your trench, then infill the area with type1, compact it down in 3" layers, carefully remove the boarding/shuttering, a little drop will probably fall back in, but as long as nobody jumps about on it etc should be ok until you pour concrete...
Get a citroen C15 1.8 diesel, does 300k miles+ if looked after, plus you get them quite cheap. Dont get anything with the ford 1.8 diesel, these engines are TERRIBLE, seen quite a few melt after lowish miles plus the timing belts snap for a living.
Road scrapings hold more water as well, making the bedding sand wetter and more liable to sinkage if its a wet area. For all the cost difference , you'd be better to go with good old type 1 crushed stone
