Why isn't 3-core cable the standard for lighting circuits?

Just connect the spare core to the earth terminal at each end (as well as the (hopefully G/Y sleeved) earth core). Then it's there if you need it in the future.

Oh dear! (Shoddy electical work) (Ed.)

Thing is, if you don't know and you don't know that you don't know. I wonder if it's on an RCD protected circuit.

Adding a suitable heater to a tiny toilet for my mum

Oil filled radiator with timer. You'll need to install a 13A socket in the toilet, you can't run it from a lighting circuit. It does not require an electrician to do this, it is well within the scope of a competent DIYer. Where is the nearest 13A outlet? It may be possible to take a spur from...

Your opinion on the safety and legality of this board please.

There are ways to extend a busbar - that's not one of them, it may not be making good contact in the terminals and will be physically stressing the devices. Devices not aligned and busbar not fully inserted. Where's the busbar cover? Given that BG busbars are not exactly expensive and are...

Loop electrics changed by national grid but left with consumer unit issues?

And nothing that was done could change the power going through the consumer unit as all the DNO work would (should) have been on their side of the meter. Uprating the DNO fuse will not make one iota of difference to the power being drawn by the installation. Something else must be going on...

RCD FCU tripped when fitted to CH, likely reasons?

The UPS is a separate unit from your GTI? A proper online UPS does double conversion - AC - > DC - > AC so the output waveforms and characteristics are totally separate from the mains input. So whether the input comes from the grid or from your GTI in inverting mode is nether here nor there -...

I wouldn't know, I don't do domestic. It depends on many things, you need to get some quotes. Someone else may have a better idea

Do i need to rewire or upgrade consumer unit for EICR??

Wrong way round. EICR first. Get any C1 & C2s fixed ( not necessarily by the same electrician....get quotes). Keep original EICR together with EICs from the remedial work. Job done.
