I did actually follow what you said, that surprised me. However I decided to go for the simpler second option that you mentioned as it was a floodlight I was installing. The result of all this is that I now a working outside light. Thanks very much for your help. :lol:

There is a single red wire into L1; the other wire apart from the red wire into L2 there is a separate 'bare' wire within the sheath that has been cut back. The only other wires will be the 3 wire to go the outside light. I also have a 3 pin wall socket in the garage; could this be used instead?

I have a single switch in my garage for one light, it has a red cable into L1 and a red one into L2. I want to install an outside light and put a double switch in its place. The double switch I have has L1, L2 and common on the top and bottom. What cables go where?? :(
