Repointing gable end, but with extra problem

Ah, so then I can box in with a lightweight upvc box, and not need to support the tiles. Never knew that existed. To rake out, fit undercloaking strip and re-mortar one roof edge, assuming no problem bits what sort of price would I be looking at as a rough estimate? Cheers Ben

Repointing gable end, but with extra problem

Hi all. I have the same problem appearing on all corners of my house (chalet bungalow). At the bottom of the roof line, where it meets the wall, the corner section (the end of the soffit/fascia) has fallen away. It was a rendered section of block & old timber, now leaving an open end of the...

    Wood stain for new timber

Hi all, I have just finished installing a new hemlock (an un-knotty type of pine I believe) stair & gallery landing handrails, newel posts, balusters etc and now want to finish it with a wood stain. Can anyone help with: 1. Decent types of wood stains to look for 2. Best methods of...

Leaking new shower. Grouting must be the problem?!?

Hi, I've had a new shower enclosure installed, all lovely tiled etc. It's leaking from somewhere when the shower is used (eliminating a water supply problem). I have also proved it is not the silicone seals, with the use of a cut up shpwer curtain hung around the walls, covering the tiles...

    Asbestos Soil Stack Removal

Hi, I’ve got an asbestos soil stack I need to remove so I can replace, and not sure where to start looking for someone to remove it. Can anyone recommend people/companies in the Southampton/Hampshire area to get in contact with? Is it 100% definitely a professional only job, or could it...

    Recasting a concrete floor.

The house is nearly 50 years old, so as suggested, It could possibly be a compaction issue. I will do as you said shytalkz, and break a small area out & see. Thanks for the advice!! No doubt as my DIY projects get more adventurous (you should see the state of this place!! Formica city...

    Recasting a concrete floor.

Thanks very much noseall & JerryM. I didn't realise it was such a deep job, but then thats why I'm on here to get the right advice. I would never be happy with a repair job, so it will be a replace! Excuse my ignorance, but could a latex (or similar) self leveling screed be used...

    Recasting a concrete floor.

This may seem like a very straight forward question, but I’m at a loss at the best way to recast a concrete floor ensuring it is level. The floor in my kitchen has “dropped & cracked” by approx 35-40mm on one side of the room, leaving a slope. I want to break this whole floor out (about...

Lay carpet before or after fitting skirting boards?

There seems to be quite a few of us about to lay carpets & fix skirting boards. I would go along with your thought danlightbulb, that if you fit the skirting after, you sandwich the carpet in between the skirting & the gripper, and this will either mean removing skirtings (not a practical...

    Bitumen on concrete floor

It's in very good condition, so I can lay straight on the top!! That would save a massive amount of work trying to clean that large area!! Cheers!

    Bitumen on concrete floor

It probably sounds daft, but i'm removing the parquet & putting down laminate, on the normal DPM underlay etc. Don't want the bitumen to damage anything by leaving it there. The parquet is so bad condition it's not worth (nor do i have the time) to restore it!

    Bitumen on concrete floor

I have just removed an old parquet floor and the old bitumen adhesive is left on the concrete below. It is a very thin layer but is still slightly tacky. Would it be best to remove it (if so, any ideas on the best way) or should I be looking to "skim" over the top (if so what with/how much...
