Visited the church again today and all three of those capacitors I fitted have failed. Cheap Amazon rubbish. I'll just leave them with the lag tube working rather than bypass the cap.

Hi, Just resurrecting my thread from last March before lockdown. I was finally able to go into the church today and fix those faulty thorn 6ft lead lag fittings with new 5uf capacitors from amazon. Thanks again for the help. Rich

Can you still buy oval shaped lamp holders? There are 2 fixtures there with bad connections, one has a noticeable burn mark if you take the tube out. I just made an error and bought the wrong bulbholder without checking. Lesson learned.

Heres one of the battens with a dead cap. The tube that's on only works if you jiggle it. I genuinely thought these were t12 battens and got hold of some t12 bulb holders but they are too big. Cost more in delivery charges so no point sending them back.

Glow bottle starters. I changed about 7 that didnt work, most of them the wrong type for a 6ft like the one shown, although that one still works. I think people see 80w and think it'll work for a 70w which it does for a short time and then seizes. Yeah I saw the word vivatronic and wondered why...

I've had a look inside and it is a lead lag circuit. I didnt bypass the capacitor but I'll order one and see if it does the trick. The battens aren't quite as old as I thought, ie they are 2x70w t8 thorn emi. Thanks for your help everyone.

Maybe I am confusing things. Just indulging a hobby fixing lights but these ones are a bit more broken than I was expecting.

They use 70w greenstock shatterproof tubes. I have a 6ft t12 which didnt work either.

I like the way srs fittings start and the way the tubes fail (memories from school). I cant copy the picture but if you search for Vintage Thorn 6ft Twin Fluorescent Fittings on Ebay there is a picture.

Thank you for the schematic it's a great help. I'll have to take a look inside the fitting and see what's what. Look out for some ballasts going back on Ebay shortly :(

I queried with the seller as the picture showed the fitting had 3 ballasts, 2 are labeled as series types as I've seen on a YouTube video for an 8ft batten. He acknowledged it was unusual. My initial question to him was was it an srs fitting as I'd love to own one but it's a switch start fitting.

Thanks for that quick reply! Much appreciated. Which ballast is the capacitor in series with? (series one or the non series). I'd probably want it to be a like for like replacement and not bypass anything. They've already fitted leds to some rooms in the church and a few are playing up already...
