    Drilling for concealed hinges

I think I have a slightly different job, but here seems a good place... Fitting solid oak kitchen doors to carcasses with factory fitted hinges. I'm aware that all it takes is a cicular bore in the correct place... but I'd really appreciate some handy hints so I dont sod it up/end up with...

Ledge & Brace Doors + Tee Hinges ; Choosing Hinge Size

Thanks for the reply :) Would you be able to explain (or point me in the direction of an explanation) how to/where to fit band hinges too? I should have said, these are internal doors. Some open inwards, some outwards. I would still need to know what size band hinges to use. Half the...

Hanging Ledge & Brace Doors + Hinge Fronts

Thanks for the reply. (Sorry I don't know what you mean by 'fingers') They are internal doors, so security isn't an issue. As I said in my post, some open inwards, some open outwards, hence I'm having this problem.

Outdoor Lighting - Separate Ring / Trip switch?

I was talking to the guy who's run the wires through alongside the tester. Sorry, not up to speed with the terms. But this isn't the chap who's testing and writing off the job.

Outdoor Lighting - Separate Ring / Trip switch?

Thanks for the replies. When I enquired today and he looked like a rabbit in the headlights I could only start to wonder. He faffed about only the upstairs and downstairs being on different switches, which was incorrect, as the dinning room etc is on another again. I hate to doubt someone...

Hanging Ledge & Brace Doors + Hinge Fronts

Hi all, As topic suggests, I have ledge and brace doors to hang... Looking at the planked face of the door, some of them open towards you, and some away. For the sake of them all looking the same, I want to put the matching dummy 'hinge fronts' on the face of the doors which open 'away'...

Ledge & Brace Doors + Tee Hinges ; Choosing Hinge Size

Hi all, I've got ledge and brace doors of varying widths and I'm looking for a rule of thumb on which to base my selection of hinge size/length (span across door). These are heavy oak doors, upto 836 wide. For this size would the best rule of thumb be 18" ~ half the width of door, or...

Outdoor Lighting - Separate Ring / Trip switch?

Hi all, I've got a guy in doing complete rewire. Yesterday when last to leave I flicked off the trip switches instead of going around turning off all the lights. It was already dark, so thought I would leave the switch for the external lights on. I noticed the lounge lights and the...

    New Rules

CFLs can be as bright as you like! I think it is a matter of choosing the watts and kelvins carefully. I had some 11w 4000K GU10s and they glared like hell! Down to 9w 2500K and its warm and fuzzy, just what I was after :)

Slate Hanging... Felt or No Felt???

Sorry to be dense here, but when you say roof level... do you mean on the roof, as this is on the wall? This guy suggested cementing the 2 ends as repointing the side walls anyway. Do I take it you're suggesting capping down the ends with wood? Appologies, I'm not quite with you.

Slate Hanging... Felt or No Felt???

Hi all, Slate hanging the rear of a stone built cottage in Devon. Builder says he never uses felt under the slates for slate hanging, Slate Merchant say you must... So what's the answer? I'm inclined to go with using felt myself, but I'd like a bit of backup before forcing it to the...

    stairs in old house

I had to say hello, and good luck with your stairs, as I just took delivery of my new stairs (for a new position) today. I'm not too far from Plymouth, and I too had to move the stairs from a raised kitchen, in an old property. Sadly, even saying that, I can't really help you. It was part...
