    New light added to circuit

i luv it when ya get regs numbers quoted lol. Problem been though, how many people would turn down an easy job because they knew the bonding weren't upto scratch? guess it is all down to your own conscience! and as previously mentioned, if you cannot trace the end of a lighting circuit...

    New light added to circuit

Well i was taught (rightly or wrongly) that you modify a circuit then you are responsible to ensure that circuit is safe. Yes, I understand that doesn't mean lifting floors / smashing floors etc to ensure safe runs etc. still, it has made me think and I guess what the real case is that you...

    New light added to circuit

if i added to the end of the circuit then i will be able to get my Zs reading and as long as it passes then all is fine. If it didn't pass i guess I would have to fix the problem, or remove the light and state that I cant extend and remove the joint. I still believe though that if you work...

    New light added to circuit

thanks holmslaw, I just thought if you were modifying a circuit though you took responsibility for that circuit. so what if after this joint there were (totally exaggerating) hundreds of meters of extra lights and therefore a fault on the circuit at the end would not trip the breaker. would...

    New light added to circuit

Hi Guys, wondered if anyone could give me advice on hypothetical question. You go to a customer who wants an additional light added onto a lighting circuit. lets say they want 2 lights in there sitting room instead of one. How would you go about carrying out a Zs test if all the other...

Wall socket circui tripping off seemingly randomly.

you my have a loose conenction somewhere on the circuit. If you can trace what sockets etc is on that circuit (turn the MCB off and see what does not work) and then check for tightness on all connections (I would still check for voltage each time for safety), hopefully this could solve the problem?

    rcd for lighting circuits

hi wellerman. if it was me I would do as you sort of suggest. switch the lighting to the RCD side of the CU (if you have experience of this, remember electric ain't your fried and will quite easily make you meet your maker). this removes the requirement for supp bonding. you need to think...

    Main Earthing conductor

actually I do agree with your advice and I have mentioned to him that he should replace this cable with two new cables. one directly to the earth rod to the MET and then one from the MET to the Gas pipe (well actually he can keep the one connected to the gas pipe since its all ready there)...

    Main Earthing conductor

But effectively this is what you do anyhow. main earthing conductor runs up to MET then protective earth runs back down to gas / water pipe. all are joined up. when testing you have to test the main earthing conductor and you need to remove the protective earths. to do this on this situation...

    Main Earthing conductor

and there goes the familiar saying "its not an electrician you need, its a magician" Still though, just to confirm :) Is it a complete no no or just an interpretation of the regs? after all, as said, it is not using the gas pipe as a earth electrode

    Main Earthing conductor

thanks holmslaw, I understand that you are not allowed to use the gas or water as a main earth electrode. But he has a main earth electrode in place. At present the main earthing conductor enters the property with the vicinity of the gas pipe and as i have stated has been connected to the gas...

    Main Earthing conductor

Thanks ColJack. I did suspect that. My friend has a property he is renovating and this is the situation in his house. He is an electrical engineer and was stating that since the cable is not broken it still provides the main earthing bond as well as connecting the gas pipe. Do you know / or...

    Main Earthing conductor

Hi, Is it acceptible to connect the main earthing conductor that is ran from a earth rod on a TT system to the gas pipe on route to the main earthing terminal? The cable is not broken, just a small part of the outer sheath removed. Or would you have to run the main earthing conductor all the...
