Battery size to use off peak power?

Yesterday for the first time since solar panels fitted with batteries, the battery did not fully discharge before I went on reduced tariff of around 9p a kWh. Yes produced more than used before, but first time when at midnight I had not gone down to 10% charge, with 3.2 kWh battery. I suspect...

Headlines Six tumble dryer fires in seven weeks but what type?

The BBC report says "Do not leave appliances unattended – do not turn the tumble dryer on before you leave the house or go to bed." however when one has a night tariff one will want to set the drier to run over night. "No trend had been identified as yet with make or models." However is it so...

No mobile signal, how we rely on it, and other methods?

I had a holiday to the North East, not my normal area, and while there went to visit the Beamish museum, and I never even considered that I may loose touch with my wife. Hired two mobility scooters, very good service, but half way through wife went ahead, and some how I missed where she had...

Cost to heat DHW oil v electric?

As yet not getting paid for export, so clearly electric is the cheapest, once set up I will get 15p per kWh for exported electric, and if I use electric over night it will cost me 8.95p per kWh so really no point in having the iboost+. However last year I see it showed around just over a kWh per...

Three port valve and John Wards video some thing seems wrong?

The grey wire is energised when DHW is NOT required, comes from the normally closed contact, both on the tank thermostat and the programmer. So when the DHW only is required there is no power to the valve, and the boiler is supplied from terminal 1 (N/O) from the tank thermostat. If then CH is...

How often is smart meter app updated?

My app last reading is 26th Feb, now 16th March which seems a long time. The in home display shows what is used each day, but no option to look back, so ever since changing tariff I have lost the ability to compare use. I am sure not loosing money, but at this early stage really need to work...

Out of interest, multi TN-C-S supplies in metal framed and metal clad buildings.

I am trying to get my head around multiple TN-C-S supplies where metalwork of some sort, connects the buildings, or supplies. What stops excessive current through the PEN conductor if the PEN of one supply is lost? Or what stops excessive current through connecting metalwork, for example an air...

Recommend a cheap wireless thermostat please.

I fitted one of these in mothers house and it got weaker and weaker with the RF link and had to be moved closer and closer to the base. This one was very good, but not programmable, and are now rather expensive, the idea is to put it in parallel with the existing Nest so when the wind is in...

What is the point of the smart meter monitor?

Had to get a smart meter installed to get payment for export, and when installed given a little monitor, it shows most of the time, from when sun comes up, until battery is discharged except for when having a shower, or battery is full, with the latter it does show export, but little I can do...

Smart meter display, and instructions on use.

It seems this is my display one would have thought instructions would have come with it, rather than have to hunt for them on the internet, however there seems to be some options not available to all. I found feet slide off, giving access to a battery carrier, however fitted 3 AAA batteries...

RCD FCU tripped when fitted to CH, likely reasons?

The central heating did run on a RCBO until solar panels fitted, no problems, when solar panels fitted it was transferred to a UPS supply, so no longer fed through the RCBO, so I fitted a RCD FCU, but when CH started it tripped, so put old FCU back, thought summer is time to fiddle, not winter...

Paint on railway platform benches peeling off.

Every years the benches are brought in over winter, and if required are repainted, but it seems the colour being used was not the correct great western colour, so we had intended to do a few benches each year even if not needed, however the ones painted last year, paint had pealed off for this...

Electric theft by EV owners causing charge points to be switched off. Again.

I note yet again the charging point has be switched off due to people not registering for payment. Same happened last year during the winter months, that much power was being taken with the 15 minutes grace given to register with the app, and then the recipient not registering, they were running...

    RCD type with an iBoost+

The instructions are here nothing about RCD protection which does seem strange. It can supply up to 3 kW so clearly a 6 mA DC is a bit pointless, I assume the problems are only after the unit, and supply side standard RCBO is fine. And since it only supplies the iboost+ if DC did bind it, in...

Power used by tumble driers, question due to post on electrics UK part of forum.

My very old vented tumble drier has the option of full or half power, we always ran it on half power, as some times on full it would trip over heat on back, it would take around 90 minutes to dry clothes, but when we moved, faced with either drilling a hole for vent, or leaving window open, so...

Weather compensation what does it do?

If I feel warm at 20ºC that's the temperature I feel warm at, and it really does not matter what the weather outside is doing. I can see if going to be a warm day, better to allow home to remain cool in the morning so don't need AC latter in the day, but this is forecasting, not compensation...

    Earths and smart sockets.

Just watched a Big Clive YouTube where he looks at why a socket was subject to recall. It seems due to earth one left and right of a double socket not being interconnected. He says electricians would test, however not sure I would have done. I am so use to sockets with two earth connections...

Taking too long to reach temp set, some times, what steps to take?

I think possible there is a valve which has been hidden when the garage was made into a flat. But unlikely to find it in a hurry, so looking at improved control. On a cold day, set wall thermostat to 20ºC in the morning and all works OK, but on a warmer day it over shoots, so on a warm day set...

    Fan assistance for radiators.

I have a Myson in last house, and tried using a fan next to standard radiator, the latter was not a success, too powerful, I would like to boost radiator output, I would think a processor fan would be enough. So wonder if anyone has already done it, and if so how they got on?
