    Problem removing old floor tiles

I am trying to lift some old cork floor tiles in my bathroom but it is difficult. They are stuck down with adhesive on to vinyl tiles underneath. The Vinyl tiles are stuck to the concrete floor. The whole lot is very hard to shift using a scraper. I don't care whether I remove just the cork...

Equivalents to USA "penny sizes" for nails

I have several USA books which refer to nails by "penny sizes" e.g. 2d nail, 6d nail, 8d nail (presumably these are "old pennies") Can anyone help with converting these to British equivalents, please?

    Disconnecting an electric cooker

Just one other thought. You may want to disconnect the cable at the cooker end rather than the wall plate end, so that you can re-use it with the new cooker if it doesn't come with new cable.

    Disconnecting an electric cooker

There's no special problem about disconnecting, just be absolutely sure the supply is off. Check that nothing on the cooker is working. If your cooker control switch has a socket included check that it's not working either. Don't rely on the cooker switch, switch off the circuit breaker or...

How do you use a multimeter???

The problem is not really about how to use a multimeter but rather a lack of basic electrical knowledge. You need to understand the relationship between volts, amps and ohms (Ohm's Law), the difference between a.c. and d.c. , a bit about simple circuits, etc. before you can use a meter to...

    Cable Pulling

When doing a domestic rewire, is it usually possible to pull new cable into existing runs with capping and plaster covering or does it need new runs to be chased out ? Does capping come in various sizes e.g. for 1 sq mm, 2.5 sq mm cables? Would it be sensible to use oversize capping to...

    Condensing boilers to be compulsory?

Thanks for the replies. I've found some info in Which? magazine :- Q. My engineer told me that condensing boilers are expensive and unreliable. Is that right? A. Some of the first condensing boilers weren't well made and there were many problems which gave them a bad name. They've now...

    Condensing boilers to be compulsory?

I have been told by a plumber that condensing boilers will soon be compulsory (from next year?). He also said that they have a poorer reliability record than non-condensing types. Are both of these things true? I have a 15-year-old Potterton Flamingo II that still works fine. I have a...

    45A mcb too hot?

A 45A mcb should not trip on 47A load unless it is on for a long time, so the mcb may be faulty. It certainly shouldn't be getting hot. I haven't got the regs and tables to hand but as a quick check go to http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Technical/Charts/VoltageDrop.html It shows that...

Should have said Volts x Amps x Power Factor = Watts = True power

    Kva

You've got it the wrong way round. Volts x Amps = Voltamps = apparent power (ignores phase angle, power factor) Volts x Amps x Power Factor = true power (allows for phase angle)
