    it sounds like when the house was built the one cable from both upstairs and down stairs has been lost and an apprentice has connected both cables into the fuse thinking that its on a ring and should have failed the inspection if the house is only seven years old.

    i would go with the high level single socket and a plug on the extractor so in a few years time if the extractor burns out it will be easier to unplug it and remove than opening up the fcu to disconnect

    Waterproof bathroom/kitchen sealant easier said than done !!

    dont put to much sealant on then get some washing up liquid and put a little bit on a clean surface then use that on your finger it should be easier

    Drilled through electrical cable

    you can crimp the cables and wrap insulating tape tightly around the crimps.It will svae you the mess of chasing the wall and pulling in a new cable the patching back up.
