Why can't we drill through our wall?

Yes, we were only using a cheap Wilkinsons drill bit - about £3.50- but it was fine until it hit this 'black' spot and even then it didn't break. Anyway, I don't expect it will ever be used again. Thanks again.

Why can't we drill through our wall?

Thanks Eddie. Drill bit plenty long enough at 400mm, and already successfully drilled 240mms so it had to be an obstacle. After leaving the drill to cool down for a while he had a final push and he's through. A thin chunk of the outside brick came off and revealed that just under the surface...

Why can't we drill through our wall?

Other half is trying to install a power point in the garden. He is drilling a hole through the brick wall of the (newish) conservatory from the inside out, using a 10mm masonry drill on hammer action. He has succeeded in drilling about 24cms in but can get no further. He must nearly be through...

    Preparation for laying turf?

Thanks Thermo. I did do a search before posting and saw this posting of yours : 'whatever you do dont compact it with a whacker. You will create a soil pan where the layer is too hard for the water to permeate and it will cause drainage problems for the new lawn. Rotovate it to get it down...

    Disguising tree stumps?

What would you do? I have two small stumps side by side. They were professionally cut to almost ground level and treated about 3 months ago. I was thinking of a raised bed over them but wondered if there was anything a bit cheaper? Any ideas appreciated. Thanks.

    Fence posts, preservatives, et el.

I saw a gardening program many years ago where the presenter recommended placing a plastic bag over the end of the wooden post before adding the concrete. I can't remember how he finised it off though. Anybody tried this?

How do I deck this area?

I want to lay a deck over a concreted area in the corner of the garden but have two problems. 1) the concrete has been poorly laid and slopes away too much to the right. Otherwise it is sound. 2) I want the decking to be about 18" wider than the concrete. This area is bare earth but...

Removing exterior paint from car bodywork?

Can anyone help please? Due to a mis-calculation of the range of spray when painting the garage, one side of my car is dotted with thousands of tiny spots of water-based exterior emulsion. Repeated washing has had no impact. Has anyone got any suggestions please? Many thanks

    Electric supply to concrete garage?

It's detached, Mr Winston - about 4 metres from the house. It has concrete walls, which have been bolted together, metal doors and surround and 2 wooden roof beams. It's a basic Comptons model.

    Electric supply to concrete garage?

Can anyone help me please? I want to install a couple power points and light in an unlined concrete garage. What do I need to do? What are current regulations? How do I install the points and light switch given that I cannot drill into the concrete? Is there anything else I should know...

    Smelly Cloakroom !!!!!!

Thanks again, Kev. Just a couple more questions as i am a complete novice at this stuff. I had a few minutes yesterday so I opened all the drain covers in the garden and they looked clean to the naked eye. At the weekend I intend to check the flow through them by flushing toilets...

    Smelly Cloakroom !!!!!!

Thanks for your replies. kevplumb, What is an 'air admittance valve' and where would I find it? BAHCO, I had already checked for damp patches so I don't think it's cracked or leaking. The smell is more 'eau de faint sewer' than damp anyway!

    Smelly Cloakroom !!!!!!

Can anyone help please ? We moved into our house 8 weeks ago and for the last 4 or 5 weeks we have noticed an unpleasant smell in the downstairs loo. It is not there all the time and it soon clears once the window is opened. The loo is flushing OK so there doesn't appear to be a blockage...

Any tricks or tips for hanging a new door?

I want to fit a bi-fold door in my house but I am a complete novice. The house is only 6 years old so hopefully there shouldn't have been much movement and the door sizes are standard. Is this a job a (pretty useless) novice should tackle? Thanks.

    Plumber or carpenter?

Survey of house I am buying noted that the water tank in the loft is resting on chipboard and recommended that it should be replaced with something more suitable. Not a big job but, unfortunately, not one that I can manage. So, who do I ask for a quote, plumber or carpenter and any ideas how...
