    Best approach to new floor

Folks Hoping for some advice. I have lifted the floor upstairs on one side of my house (20-yr old conversion where the floor joists were spread a bit too far apart:-( In putting the floor back, I will end up with 3 areas: bathroom; landing (stairs going into the loft); bedroom - the...

Domestic fire sprinkler systems - any experience?

Thanks for all the help/advice. I am going to look first at an alternative (basically, move a stud wall in the kitchen, which will (a) increase the floor space and (b) provide me with a space to put a door, between the kitchen and the hall - I hope :) Will gen up on the sprinklers, though...

Domestic fire sprinkler systems - any experience?

Kevplumb - thanks - I scanned that site yesterday, but digging deeper has helped (a little - clearly an outline design is needed in order to work through some of the calculations) chrishutt - Figures came from a check on the water flow inside the house (which is currently 15l/min), and then a...

Domestic fire sprinkler systems - any experience?

Hi Not sure if this is the right forum, but seemed the best match. I am having a loft conversion done, and had the designer round recently. To cut a long story short, all seems fine BUT I don't have a door to the kitchen, just a narrow(ish) archway. Advice I have been given...

Opinion on best way to rationalise my plumbing

Hi Looking for opinions, please. I have a 4-bed detached house, approx 50 years old. Since it was built there has been at least two, possibly three, changes to the plumbing. This has left the house with: 1. A boiler downstairs, which runs the central heating and provides hot...

    Aligning levers on a tap

Kevplumb was right - You can remove the levers and re-align them by removing the "hot" (or "cold") cover on the tap, removing the fixing screws and then re-aligning. Nervous of trying this originally because there was no obvious join between the cover and the tap body Ho hum - turned...

    Aligning levers on a tap

Hi I have just installed a couple of new taps on a sink. The taps have levers that rotate approx 90 degrees in a horizontal plane, and these allow the flow of water. For aesthetics only, I would like the lever to align fully with the spout when in the "off" position. I am sure this is...

    No flow bath hot water.

May not be relevant, but this happened to me a while ago - there was (still is) a flexible pipe from the hot water tap to the water supply - this had "kinked", and was effectively reducing the water flow. Bath panel off, unkinked the pipe, all now as it should be HTH Dave

    Overflow from Expansion Tank

Thanks for the replies To confirm - it was 'spurting', not a steady stream/trickle Early indications are that it is indeed the stat on the boiler itself - have put it back down to 140 (from 180), and thus far nothing has come through the vent pipe - will keep an eye on it over the next few...

    Overflow from Expansion Tank

Apologies for not providing enough detail (I came to the forum from a Search, so didn't see the 'advice' posts initially). Right - boiler is gas-fired GlowWorm (prob about 20 yrs old) It's a 2-circuit system (cold-water and expansion tank in the loft) No work has been done to it recently...

    Overflow from Expansion Tank

Hi - the Overflow from the Expansion tank has recently started spewing hot water into the garden, at periodic intervals. On investigating, the vent pipe from the hot-water cylinder is the culprit, with spurts of water topping the expansion tank up. Any suggestions? Those that spring to my...
