hi

looking for some advice on moving the master phone socket 300mt to a new building, without losing signal strength for voice/broadband etc

looked at running in cat6 and bt drop cable, but been getting different responses

can anybody suggest how to or had experience of a long extension

cheers

You definitely don't want Cat6 cable, it's 23AWG, so it doesn't fit properly into IDC connections designed for 24AWG wire, which BT sockets, IDC connection boxes, Krone strips, etc all are.

If the cabling is going through an underground duct, then you want CW1128 cable, as it is properly waterproof and not just "weather resistant" like most cables which say they are "external grade". So avoid CW1308B also. The petrolium jelly inside the cable jacket (which is what helps make it waterproof) is slightly flammable, so it's only allowed 3 metres into a building, then you can join on some CW1308 cable if it needs to go further in the building, or just terminate the cable into a BT phone socket directly ideally.

If it's being clipped along a fence or similar, then external Cat5e or CW1308B will be fine.

There's no real way of saying how the signal will be affected without just trying it and seeing what happens. The distance from the exchange to you is probably a LOT more than 300m, so an extra 300m shoudn't make that much difference.

Gaz :)

Also as far as your data goes, the speed you pay for will probably be the biggest factor, with regards to voice, if you notice the line is a bit quieter, you could always give them a call and ask them to turn the gain up on your line a bit, but bear in mind this will probably increase the volume of any noise on the line.

As far as i'm aware, the BT master socket belongs to BT and you're not allowed to move it. Hopefully you mean you want to add an extension off the back of it?

300m is a very long distance and you will definitely notice a reduction in broadband sync speed. As the poster above said, your voice quality will also suffer a little.

I suspect there are better ways to achieve what you're trying to do without moving the socket or added extra cable.

That is correct and to be honest OpenReach are likely to turn a blind eye if a Master Socket is moved a short distance using the correct materials and methods

To move a master socket 300 metres is very different matter. Your best option is to leave the Master Socket where it is as the Open Reach demarcation point (*) and using a suitable cable wire a single pair from the A B terminals in the existing Master Socket to a new Master Socket ( aka NTE 5 ) at the location you want it.

I may be wrong ( rules changed ) but in the past OpenReach ( then BT ) would not install and NTE 5 ( Master socket ) more than a few metres from the perimeter of the property so trying to pass off 300 metres of DIY wiring as OpenReach wiring will be very difficult

(*) demarcation point = the point where OpenReach's responsibility ends and your's begins.

if you really need to MOVE the master socket to another building then you'll have to pay Openreach for an external shift.
