hello,,,i was wondering if any of you builder lads could tell me how to get around paying council tax on an empty property,,,im quite new to the property game,,,like lets say I buy a property I intend to renovate but haven't got the time to do it at the minute so need to leave it empty for say 6 month or even a year,,,can you say take out the kitchen to make it uninhabitable and get it reclassified by the local authority to be council tax exempt rather than having to shell out a years tax for a property which is just sat empty or what???

First thing is some Councils allow you 6 months zero council tax, others 6 months 50% off etc. I believe it's up to individual councils to set their empty property council tax policy.
One other think to think about is insurance for a vacant building. You might find you need specialist insurance!!!

yes all depends on the council
and as said insurance can be expensive if uninhabited for 30 consecutive days
uninhabited mean not staying 24 hours and sleeping this again different to different companies

You'll have to talk to your council. The one down here makes you pay after a month if the place is just empty. Presumably for all the services you are enjoying! If you are renovating it, I think it's 6 months "free" here, but you have to tell them when you are renovating.
As the others have said, the landlord's insurance goes up considerably if the place is empty for more than a month. Again you need to talk to your insurer.
