Hi,

I have seen around 10 driveways go in around my way with an Aco drain where the drive joins the road.

None of them are connected to drainage/soakaways

What does it achieve?

I checked where my friends live and its the same

Do you need Planning Permission to connect to combined drainage system?

If the drain is discharging any collected runoff into the soil at the edge of the drive then no permissions are required. Connection to the drainage system would require approval, and then demonstration that all other avenues for disposal of the water has been explored.

Would permitted develop rights apply?

I.e if it had been connected to combined sewer for over four years then they
Wouldn't seem permission?
A bit like when you claim land at the side of your house

Would demonstrating that you tried everything be things like;

Drive slopes towards house
Soakaway could only be 4m from house and 0m from boundary
Hardstanding that was there already draining to combined sewer

Would that make any difference when it comes to selling?

Nearly every drive round here uses the combined sewer for drainage

You would be allowed to drain into the mains if no other options are available. Probably.

Though this has nothing to do with Planning Permission, Building Control would be responsible for allowing it.

If you have an ACO that has been installed and it illegally discharges into a public drain then only after 4 years do you become immune from prosecution. It never becomes legal.
