Any advice welcome regarding old glow worm boiler

My neighbour has just been quoted £3,500 to replace her 16 year old boiler and yes it would take a few years to recoup this money from energy savings, the older you get the less inclined you are for all the bother.

Birmingham is an area where heating work is rather cheaper than many other areas.

British Gas might quote £3500 but an independent would probably do it for £2000 or less.

If its a freestanding boiler then in most cases we would be replacing it for less that £1700 in our local area. About £1400 if it were a wall mounting boiler.

If you now spend £800 pa on gas then with a new boiler that would reduce to about £550 saving £250 per annum which would pay for the change in about 8 years.

OR you could get a return if 12.5% on the capital cost. You dont get that from a Building Society!

But you do get all your money back from a Building Society (Let's not start a red herring here ;) ), which doesn't happen when you spend it on a new boiler.
