I am fed up with traders not offering the service they claim. Can you believe that I have had disappointing results with two plumbers and one electrician over the past year.

Also the quotes they give are outrageous. :(

In this climate you would expect traders to be making special offers etc to get in new business.
I am currently looking for a plumber around Merseyside and there is a new skills website offering local deals on a range of trades.

Anyone used them?

It'll be just as crap as all the rest of the sites, they work for the contractors not the customers so are always biased, friends and family recommendations are the only (usually) reliable source. anything else is just a gamble unfortunately.

Whats the website called ? Im fairly close to Liverpool done a few jobs there recently. Im a part P registered electrician and works very slow at the moment.

Very hard to get a good tradesman and "professional job" does not mean that the job is necessarily a good job.

It means the job has been done for money!

Most people I have had have been called back to the job over the years as they always try to get away with something.

Does not pay to be familiar with tradesmen and always keep them at arms length.

FAMILIARITY BREEDS CONTEMPT

You want a good reliable plumber, but you only want to pay "special rates". That just about sums up the way people think in this city.

I'm a damm good, very reliable plumber, in liverpool, and I only get paid when people are satisfied...............but I don't do "specials", unless you're my close family.
Try your website...best of luck.

What planet do you come from ?
Running a plumbing business isn't the same as your local furniture store, running special deals ever other week for the tight arses.

I don't get a discount on my van fuel, tax etc.
I base my rates on what i need to live on and run my business with a profit.
not to give you discounts so i can't afford to fill my car the end of the week.

Sooey, you could have at least give him your tel. no. for when his "special rates" plumber cox it right up.

My sons friend wanted me to do some plastering as he has seen the standard of our work, he had a spread plaster a room for £200 but it turned out a bit artexy, needed finishing off with sand paper   so i gave him a price and he said, quote "but i can get it done for £200" unquote, so i said get him back then! and he says "yeah but he's no good"

There comes a time when you have to politly make an excuse and get out of there fast.

He's already had two of them, and a spark..and can't understand why.

Special deals! i submited a quote for a lot of remedial work to be carried out in a Chinese take away here in Bristol a number of years ago, he bartered over the price and i let him off £200, he was over the moon, thought he had one over on me, however he did not know the difference between code 3 and code 4 lead, by time i had finished i had made more profit than i had originally quoted for, so you could say i specialise in special deals.

So you quoted one spec and fitted another - you defrauded the client.
And you wonder why tradesmen get called cowboys.

...Made a good script for 'Towering Inferno' though.... ;)

Special deals! Even for friends and family i still have to cover my costs. Everyone wants something for nothing.
I live in a fairly affluent area and this is the worst place to try and quote for work, you invariably see lithunian/bulgarian number plated vans ending up outside the houses.
I am rolling up to jobs, some refurbishments with no spec and no clue what there doing. They then expect me to cover everything and produce a spec for them. I then get the " i can get it done for xxxx£. "
People give cheap prices to getnin the door, no spec for the materials and whats being one. Theres no comparision to my quote!
I have started pricing jobs on a worse case scenario hence a higher price and i will reduce the price if they want to go ahead and give them cost saving measures.

Not at all, i quoted for the job not for the spec of materials i would use.
