I think this is an interesting topic - don't really have too many thoughts on it as I mainly shop with Selco for about 65% of my stuff which is bargained for a proper trade prices and although they can't do much on sand, cement and blocks etc. the rest of their stuff is well discounted upon asking.
I've just googled B&Q prices on blocks and a standard Conc is coming in at £1.46 - thats pretty high! I pay 60p ex VAT - thats quite a difference but as Taz suggests at the right time of day I would definitely pay the 1.46 - by the time you add in cost of travel to another merchant and your time etc. sometimes its worth buying....
Also, most of the rest of my business goes through travis, just because they have 10 or 12 locations in Bristol and they can always get specialist things that I anticipate B&Q wouldn't touch with a barge pole!
Unless you are buying 100's of thousands worth of gear these few pounds surely don't come into the equation? And as for walking away from the tills without paying for a bag seems like cutting your noses off to spite your face....

It also depends on the branch. I have a smaller one next to me and I get a discount off some items with the card at the checkout but for other items they tell be I have to drive to the other side of Bristol to the larger store to get the price online/in catalog.
Why cant these people just be honest and give you the price they know to are expecting to pay??
