Best Block for retaining wall

Hi,

I am about to build a small retaining wall at the back of my garden as I want to level the garden. I want to keep the cost down as I am on a tight budget, so was wondering if someone could recommend a good concrete block.

I would like to paint the block and also need to waterproof it. If there is not a cheap waterproof block, how do I waterproof it or is this not necessary?
