I've always preferred using oil based gloss as it covers nicely but having done 6 panelled doors that have subsequently yellowed quite quickly I dont want to use it again!

Have used water based gloss and stain but it doesnt seem to cover very well.

I guess though I'll have to persevere with water based - what is the best water based white paint for woodwork I can buy? Ideally I want to do it in one coat on top of the gloss once that has been abraded.

have there been any improvements in white paint in the last couple of years as I know oil based has been causing problems with going yellow..

aqua as a name keeps coming up so I bought some this morning! In painting previously oil based gloss doors do I need to undercoat?

Yes, for a professional result, you do. And be prepared to put at least two topcoats of the satin/gloss on, as well, abrading lightly between each coat.

Welcome to my world!

The easier way is to hire a decorator. Or buy new doors. Or leave them as they are.:)

When I was training, I was told that I should aim to paint one side of a 4 pannelled door professionally in 7 to 8 minutes. I can do that now. So in total it should only take about 11 hours to do all yours. Let that thought sustain you!

have now used this paint on skirting . It does go on nicely I must say, not unlike oil based and much more flowy if thats a word than the normal water based gloss..but I did cheat and used no undercoat and only one coat. Tons better than the last stuff I used....

I would be surprised if it adhered properly to old oil-based, without an undercoat.

If you are happy with it, fine. But you may be disappointed later if you have tried to cut corners.

just don`t let the wife touch the skirting with the hoover - that`ll cause the paint to come off ;) ;)
