Hi everyone,

I am planning to pave my rear garden by block brick. Could you please help me with the following issues:

Which material shall I use for bedding (building sand or grit sand)?
Can I use building sand as jointing sand to complete surface work?
The block paving is not for heavy loading (just footpath). If I compact the soil properly, can I skip the sub-base (hardcore)?
Which material shall I use to control weeds (geo-textile or polythene sheet)? Geo-textile is good for water penetration, but is 5g/m geo-textile strong enough.

Many thanks in advance

as your questions appear:-

sharp sand, do NOT use building sand. It has no strength for this type of work, especially when wet

No it needs to be kiln dried sand

You can skip it, but you will regret it in a few years time when parts start to sink

There is no point in putting a barrier underneath. weeds grow in the gaps between the blocks, not up through from underneath
