I had new central heating system installed recently. The two downpipes come down through the lounge - I measure about 22mm ??. I'd like to hide or box them in but when the system is running they are extremely hot to the touch. So:-

1) Is it safe to box them in - what happens to the heat? i.e. is it wasteful/dangerous?
2) could you wrap/insulate the pipes - is that saving energy? - again is this dangerous
3) I'm also concerned about placing equipment close by such as hi-fi/tv given the warmth emitted

Insulating them wouldn't make a huge amount of difference as its in a heated room anyway. The majority of the heat will travel upwards anyway.
I find they are best boxed in anyway for safety reasons like if you have kids.

1) yes, just leave a slight gap between the wood and the pipe, wouldn't be dangerous.
2) you could, it is more energy efficient and all CH pipes should really be insulated for max efficiency
3) Any Electronic equipment doesn't like too much heat so I'd keep it well away. The gauge would be, if your hand can feel the heat from the pipes, then it's too close for the equipment.
