Hi Folks

I am thinking of having my old bathroom replaced with a new one. I want my bath, shower, toilet, wash basin, and wall tiles to be replaced.
Would it be a good idea to get a bathroom fitter to buy all the above items and fit them himself or shall I buy the stuff myself and get the fitter to fit the items? The first option certainly seems a lot easier, but I don’t want to pay huge prices and get ripped off by the fitter!!
If I decide to take the 2nd option, then how do I go about measuring the bath, shower, toilet, and wash basin? What things would I need to consider when deciding on the items to buy?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Pay the fitter to do the lot. If you supply it and there is a problem with what you bought either because it's wrong or it fails down the line then it's your problem. If he buys it then it will be the right stuff or if it breaks, he supplied it so he replaces it.

A good fitter won't rip you off, you'll pay a fixed markup to cover his costs for supplying it or his time to do it.

If you start supplying your own stuff then you may get perceived as too much hassle and not get the best people even quoting for the work.

Hi Everyone

Many thanks for your reply.

I'm sorry I haven't replied earlier. I had a family bereavement.

I'm bow in a position to get the work done on my bathroom.

Before I do that, has anybody got any different ideas from what Matt has kindly suggested?

Thanks

Get some quotes and a good plumber/fitter will talk through all the available options with you.
Choices of taps and showers will also depend on the type of system you have.
Just something that you may not have thought about.

browse the internet for pictures of the type of stuff you would like, give pictures to fitter so he can find similar bits from his own suppliers. I think that's the middle ground between being a picky customer and just letting the fitter choose what your bathroom looks like.

If you decide to purchase the items yourself, here are some tips for measuring and selecting them:

  1. Measurements: Use a tape measure to accurately measure the dimensions of your existing bath, shower, toilet, and washbasin. Make note of any space constraints or plumbing connections that may impact the selection of new fixtures.
  2. Considerations: When choosing new items, consider factors such as style, size, functionality, and quality. Think about your preferences in terms of design and features, as well as any specific requirements you have for your bathroom space.
  3. Compatibility: Ensure that the items you choose are compatible with your existing plumbing and layout. Check the dimensions and specifications of each item to make sure they will fit properly in your bathroom space.
  4. Budget: Set a budget for each item and stick to it as closely as possible. Don't forget to factor in any additional costs for delivery, installation, and any necessary plumbing or electrical work.
  5. Research and Compare: Take the time to research different brands, models, and suppliers to find the best options for your needs and budget. Compare prices and read reviews from other customers to ensure you're getting good value for money.
By carefully considering your options and taking the time to research and plan, you can ensure that your bathroom remodel goes smoothly and results in a space that meets your needs and exceeds your expectations.
