I've noticed far too often that works carried out by professional tradesmen in schools is all too often of a quality which I wouldn't accept at home
Having in the last 12 months done some agancy work for a council in my local area I can tell you is wasn't the agency guys who were the underachievers - I wouldn't have many of that particular council's employees at any price. Almost all of them seemed to have no pride in their work, nor tools nor speed, either.

This might open a can of worms but the poorest work I've seen more often than not comes from agency workers and we would generally put them on the less demanding tasks.
I've seen that one from several sides; I've had crap agency joiners on jobs working for me - they generally don't last to long, I've worked with good agency guys as well - the ones with the skills, a decent toolkit and a good attitude (i.e. punctual and quality concious) and I've been an agency joiner myself. There are good and bad everywhere and it's not just the agency guys who can be carp. Agency is becoming much more common as employers seek to distance themselves with involvement with the Inland Revenue, paying paternity leave, etc (how many tradesmen does a firm like Carillion actually employ on builds - almost none) - but the thing that makes me laugh whenever I work for an agancy is the assurance that "the main contractor will supply all the power tools". Hah! Yeah, right!

I suppose what I said could be viewed as a just a tad bit of crass generalisation
To be fair it's only from my own experience. I've spent most of my life in restoration so it's probably understandable when an agency worker isn't that clued up on what is a form of specialisation. Some have of course been very good and it has been pointed out that more workers are employed through agencies so there are a higher number of good ones than there ever used to be. Twenty years ago I think the view that people only joined agencies who were the sort who couldn't get a job anywhere else was commonplace and many of the siteagents I've worked with held this view for some time.

many of the siteagents I've worked with held this view for some time.
I have to presume that they were cards in, then - at least half the site agents I've had dealings with in the last five years have been agency or short-term contract employees themselves (i.e. only employed for the duration of that job)

Yes I'd say most if not all were long term employees, I'd worked on several jobs over the years with the same site agents.

Iv'e met some good agency chippies, mainly in the two last recesiones funny isnt it The last time I worked Agency on a site in Kent the only chippie on the card's was an ass kissing waste of space and supposed to be foreman, he managed to put a flat roof on with the fall going the wrong way a bit embarrassing on a new build ,the three agency chippies did all the high tec second fix, cedar ceilings and the like put all the mistakes right and soaked up the mistakes done by subbies coordinated by site agent and foreman both on the card's and constantly facilitating crap work through ignorance instinctive ability to screw up so my view is a bit coloured

funny aint it when i was subbing, and on agency lists.done a load round brighton kept bumping into the same group of guys and always helped each other out with either advice or tools.and like a lot of you guys met some really good decent blokes who knew what they were talking about,i certainly learnt a lot with these guys.OLD SCHOOL ;)

but also came across a load of ****s who thought they knew everything and their attitude sucked.and a few of the so called chippys who were direct really shouldnt have been picking up a saw let alone a chisel.

to live i really need----------heating------lighting etc....i can live without a bedroom door etc...nuff said

i really do find it amazing that grown men have argued that they should get paid more per job coz their tools cost them more hahaha,9 grand for wood working gear,i tell you,a good chippy is worth his salt, bally hard job to do well for a novice....as for the bloke who said a monky could do a wooden window!!!!!!behave..if it wasnt for sealant?
