Catnc Lintels

It's the safe working load for the lintel. 1/1 is for brick or blockwork, 1/3 for joists and 1/19 an extreme loading.

Thanks for that but still can't see what they signify. The SWL is given for various lengths of lintel for various types of lintel so whats the point of the 1;1,1;3,1:19 designations

It's the maximum recommended outer/inner leaf loadings.

So:
If it's just carrying masonry, you'll be in the region of 1:1
If it's also got some joists on the inner leaf you will be nearer 3:1
If there happens to be a concrete floor above, then you might be nearer 19:1

The light duty lintels are generally 3:1, and the heavy duty lintels are usually 19:1.

Therefore, when calculating cavity wall lintel loads you should calculate the inner and outer leaf loads separately, bearing in mind that the inner leaf also takes all floor loads.

I don't think it's too much of an issue if the outer leaf is heavier than the inner so you could potentially have a ratio of less than 1:1, but I've never asked Catnic the question, so can't be sure.

In simple terms ....

These are ratios for cavity wall lintels, and represent the different loads which occur on each leaf of a cavity wall

The 3:1 ratio represents up to 75% of the load on the inner leaf, and is typically used for standard lintels

The 19:1 ratio represents up to 95% of the load being on the inner leaf and is used for heavy duty lintels
