Cavity Wall Air Vent

I have just had my gas fire removed from the living room. I have a small air vent in the living room. The build is cavity brick.

As I have now removed the gas fire am I okay to block/cover the air vent or does it help prevent damp and still needed to circulate air around the cavity?

Block it up with some newspaper with tape round the edges and see how you fair over the winter, if no signs of damp or condensation afterwards then block it up properly.
