Creating an independent ceiling with 6x2 joists spaced at 400 centres. I will be attaching a ledger board to the wall so I can use joist hangers.

Do I use the 6 x 2 joists I will be using as a ledger board, or use a different timber?

Also what size and length coach bolts do I use?

A 6x2, like the joists themselves.

You wouldn't use coach bolts in that situation; just use 4" screws @ 16" c/s - it's only a ceiling.

Thanks Tony - the ceiling is carrying 2 x fireboard and some insulation, and the length of joist is 3.75m - still k to use screws?

area of ceiling per screw = 0.4 x 3.75/2 = 0.75 sq m;

unit load = 0.4kn/sq m. max, therefore shear load per screw = 0.75 x 0.4 = 0.3kn.

1 no. 4" x12s screw will take shear load of 0.8kn + in C16 timber.

Thanks Tony - Does your calculation mean I'll be using 1 screw every 400mm on the ledger board?
