Hi,

My central heating is very noisy, has gotten worst within the last year, with loud popping sounds.

I have a Y system, I know how to flush the system out and add boiler silencer using the expansion tank in the loft, my questions are:
  1. If you add chemicals to the system will that not get into the hot water when it's turned on? Since the Y system looks like a single feed for both.
  2. How long should I run the system with cleaner in before flushing it?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
Dave

No, it's only the heating coil water that is the same - not the usable water in the cylinder.
You will have another bigger tank for the cylinder - don't put the cleaner in that one.

I don't know how long you should run the cleaner.
Someone else will or try the plumbing forum.

Thanks EFL, makes sense! I've been flushing the system through in the mean time, came out black initially, then bright yellow, now lighter yellow, going to keep running it until it goes clear.

I was planning on leaving the cleaner in the pipes for a week then doing a flush through next weekend, but didn't know whether it was effective in hours or days.
